Responsible for leading the active response and horizon scanning programmes of work, a significant part of which has been directing the organisational response to COVID-19 and providing expert advice and guidance to stakeholders on the ethical issues arising from the pandemic response. Directed and managed the development of a new organisational strategy, leading a programme of insight gathering and consultation with staff and key stakeholders to deliver a new strategic plan to guide the work of the organisation. Managed a team of research officers to design and deliver a programme of work on a range of issues, including vaccine ethics, technology in mental healthcare, and climate change.

Policy-lead and subject-matter expert for the organisation on end-of-life issues (including assisted dying, withdrawing and withholding treatment, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and domestic health-related human rights. Led on a number of projects exploring complex and pressing ethical issues, including conducting a series of public dialogue events with over 500 doctors and members of the public to understand perceptions and experiences of end-of-life care and physician-assisted dying; developing new professional guidance on withdrawing and withholding clinically-assisted nutrition and hydration; and designing and leading on a survey of over 28,000 BMA members to ascertain views on physician-assisted dying, the largest survey of medical opinion on this issue conducted in the UK.

Joined the Medical Ethics Department at a trainee level, before becoming an advisor and then senior advisor within the year. Quickly developed expertise in a range of medical ethical and medico-legal queries and used that knowledge to respond to individual queries from doctors; develop guidance covering common enquiries and policy debates; monitor developments in medical law; and lobby for and influence change in public policy in line with BMA policy. Led on the development of an in-depth report addressing the role of doctors and the healthcare system in the youth secure estate, and subsequent policy work.
