In my 30+ years of teaching he was one of the most involved students I ever had participate in quality, constructive class discussions. His final assignment in the course was the best I ever received and graded in this course, and his final course project was among the best of the best. I wish I had a lot more students like him. I have had Gene in my classes and have known him for the past couple years. In sharing my background in academia, I have been teaching in the Business/Accounting department here at Lakeland for over twenty years, the last twenty years as a member of the full-time Faculty. I have had a lot of students and former employees/co-workers ask for letters of recommendation over the years and have had to think long and hard on many of them. I’m sure you can relate to the ones that have been carefully written so as to be not too negative, but to also allow someone to be able to read between the lines. In the case of Gene, I didn’t run across that problem. In my years of teaching there have been several students that stand out in my mind, and Gene is one of them. Academically and intellectually, he was always at the top in terms of grades, and his motivation and preparedness was a good example to some of the less dedicated students. His contribution and dedication to school is also second to none, shown by his long-history of a proven work ethic, commitment, and drive to succeed. Although you can get a feel for Gene academically in looking at his transcripts, what you can’t see are some of Gene’s other traits and characteristics. There is not a more respectful student you would ever meet and I always appreciated him in my classes due to his passion and zeal for learning. He had a strong ability to work independently and spoke and wrote very well in expressing himself to myself and the class. Gene was also very mature for his years, which was very appreciated in some classes. Knowing a little about his personal history, you can only be even more impressed by his work ethic and drive to succeed, even at a young age. Working full-time at a good job while carrying a full academic load, only adds to my admiration of his abilities and potential.
