Providing subject matter expertise to NIH on a variety of data center and enterprise infrastructure projects.Currently, I provide subject matter expertise in the areas of data center virtualization, infrastructure operations, and monitoring for a large hosting organization within the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.

Provided cloud computing, data center, and virtualization subject matter expertise on a number of enterprise-wide projects.

As a member of the Data Center practice, I worked with clients to design and implement infrastructure solutions. I'm currently focused on Cisco UCS and VMware vSphere implementations.

I provided engineering and administration for a large web hosting environment comprised of AIX, Solaris, Linux, and Windows systems. Learned WebSphere and Apache Tomcat along the way, and supported production code deployments. And in my spare time, I deployed VMware HA clusters on an HP C7000 chassis using blade servers with NetApp storage.

Lead a team of engineers and administrators in support of the National Science Foundation’s Data Center and Infrastructure Support Services contract. Provide on-site technical engineering and direction for infrastructure services, including DNS, DHCP, Active Directory, Exchange, and various COTS products (including SolarWinds Orion NPM and ACE / RSA Server). Interface with government program management staff to align technical projects with Enterprise Architecture standards. Provide 24x7 support for over 250 production and development Windows-based and virtual (VMware) servers. Lead engineer and architect for Data Center Consolidation and Virtualization efforts leveraging VMware vSphere 4.1 HA cluster. Prepare and execute disaster recovery procedures for bi-annual recovery testing at off-site location.

Provide on-site technical subject matter expertise to a small federal agency's information technology infrastructure. Focus on architecting highly available systems and services using Microsoft Windows and RedHat Enterprise Linux platforms. Address systems security vulnerabilities as needed. Act as senior technical advisor and mentor to a team of 18 systems engineers and administrators. Track IT project work for weekly review with the client. Perform after-hours / weekend maintenance as needed.

Served as the lead client-facing architect for two large web portals: one internal and one external. Portals utilized WebSphere Application Server, ASP.Net, Java, and custom in-house applications used by thousands of agency employees and taxpayers across the country. Provided security engineering support to ensure compliance with federal security guidelines and requirements.

Provide highly available LAN services (DNS, DHCP, WINS, Active Directory 2003) to ~2000 local clients. Monitor network traffic for security incidents. Research unusual, unexpected network traffic to determine source. Utilize Ethereal Packet Analyzer to deconstruct network packets and identify source and payload of suspicious traffic. Participate in Computer Incident Response Team (CIRT) activities as needed. Respond to FedCIRC advisories concerning emerging threats to government IT infrastructure. Meet with CIO and senior management to describe security events and to recommend actions to correct. Maintain current knowledge of IT security through subscriptions to industry email lists (including Full-Disclosure, ntbugtraq, eEye, and SANS). Correlate data points from multiple sources to define scope of security incidents. Sources include Postfix mail logs, firewall logs, Windows system event logs, Unix syslog messages, and Snort / ACID alerts. Monitor Exchange statistics, including messages per hour, network traffic per hours, via MRTG. Present executive summary of Microsoft Active Directory 2003 project to Division Director and other senior management.

Provided comprehensive IT support for 100 local and 10 remote users. Served as point of contact for network connectivity, desktop support, messaging support, and network services (file and print sharing, DHCP, DNS, WINS). Performed security audit on remote office to assess overall security posture. Provided audit results to senior management, along with plans to mitigate each risk. Recommended and implemented WatchGuard Firebox firewall appliance to increase IT security at the network perimeter. Deployed TurboLinux workstation to facilitate security auditing, scanning of network. Reviewed firewall logs on a daily basis to detect Internet-based attacks. Instituted responsible patch management process for company’s IT assets, including Windows NT 4.0 Server, Windows 2000 Server, Windows 98, Windows 2000 Professional, Microsoft SQL Server 7, Microsoft SQL Server 2000, and Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5. Proposed and implemented L2TP VPN solution for remote access to intranet resources for sales staff. Assisted with the design of the Network Operations Center and ASP hosting facilities. Successfully protected network and Exchange servers from multiple virus attacks, using Symantec MailGear and WatchGuard anti-virus technologies.

Developed and maintained thirteen individual application user manuals for industry-leading association management software. Established online version of user documentation using RoboHELP HTML. Designed and implemented a style guide for all user documents produced at Avectra. Served as a bug tester for beta releases of software.
