Thirty-four years ago, as a child in Bangladesh, I experienced severe flooding that left our house submerged and my family without drinking water and cooking gas for over two weeks. My father took me on a boat to distribute relief, exposing me to the harsh realities of extreme weather events that have since become more frequent due to global warming. While I believed adults would address the issue, Bangladesh has only become more vulnerable to climate change. Dhaka, my home city, now ranks among the world's least livable cities, partly due to climate-induced migration and severe weather.This growing crisis, and my desire to create a better future for my two children, led me to launch the Global Youth Leadership Center (GYLC). Our mission is to educate youth, particularly in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, about climate science, build their leadership skills, and support them in launching initiatives for climate mitigation and adaptation. Though the Global South contributes only 5% of global emissions, these countries face the greatest risk from climate change.Before founding GYLC, I dedicated 14 years to building the Bangladesh Youth Leadership Center (BYLC) into the nation's leading youth leadership organization. We have trained over 10,000 young people in leadership, connected many to jobs, and helped others become entrepreneurs.
