I was Chief Executive of Dublin Port Company from 2010 to 2022. Over the past twelve years, the company’s business volumes have grown by one quarter and its profits by more than one-third, and during my time, the strategic direction of the company has been transformed by Masterplan 2040.  I oversaw capital investment of €500 million in nationally critical port infrastructure and there is now a pipeline of projects and finance in place to allow development to continue to bring Dublin Port towards its ultimate capacity by 2040.  In my early days, I developed a 30-year Masterplan for Dublin Port which has provided a long-term blueprint for port development and, within that, I identified the need for a transformation in the relationship between the Port and the City.  This strategic approach has resulted in new and diverse cultural, heritage and community initiatives to strengthen this important link.Chairman of the European Sea Ports Association, 2016 to 2020.

Portroe was a general cargo stevedore which moved into container handling in 2000. My main achievement was to develop a container terminal facility including the acquisition of dedicated container handling equiment (RTGs) and a sophisticated terminal operating system (Tideworks). My main challenge was managing the company through the 2008 recession by initially reducing staff and other costs and then getting new business (notably CLdN) to allow the company to survice the recession and grow again.

Managed the euro-changeover project to distribute euro coin and collect Irish coin. Subsequently I took on a business development role.

Completed assignments for a range of public sector and private sector clients including the Department of the Marine, Irish Ports (Greenore, Drogheda, Wicklow, Arklow, Port of Cork), Pleroma Distribution Limited and the EBRD.

MTL was the container terminal taken over by Imari Limited in Dublin Port following the liquidation of Dublin Cargo Handling. MTL was a start-up in a very difficult dock labour environment.

Worked mainly on transport and port-related assignments including an EU-funded Access Transport Study (for the Department of the Marine, 1988), a review of cargo handling structures in Dublin Port (for Dublin Port & Docks Board, 1990), a review of a proposal by ESBI to move Dublin Port to Loughshinney (Department of the Marine, 1991).

Worked on power generation and oil field projects in: Alexandria, Egypt; Hail, Saudi Arabia; Muanda, Congo. Main achievements included commissioning gas turbine plants in Egypt and Saudi. In Saudi, this included commissioning a synchronous compensator. Ultimately, I was the commissioning manager with overall responsibility for a 5 x 50 MW power plant.

Main role was to commission the electrical equipment in a new coal milling plant in Platin.
