I completed my PhD as a member of the Biomaterials Cluster of the Bernal Institute at the University of Limerick. The title of my thesis was 'Superabsorbent Polymers Undergoing Large Three-Dimensional Deformation'. This research focused on applying mathematical modelling to better understand the mechanics of swelling hydrogels. The developed numerical model was then experimentally validated using a novel lensfree imaging system. Hence, I have gained extensive research experience both computationally and experimentally. An overview of several transferable skills I developed during this research:- Project Management: Initially defined the project aims and successfully accomplished each of them 8 months ahead of schedule, working effectively with limited supervision.- Analysis & Problem-Solving: Identified limitations in the current methodologies used to analyse swelling hydrogels both numerically and computationally. Subsequently, I developed methodologies that mitigated these limitations (e.g. lensfree imaging).- Technical Writing & Oral Presentation: Publication of four first author articles in Q1 journals as well as the presentation of this work at 4 international conferences.- Scientific Computing: Development of several models (including convolutional neural networks) and analysis programs in both Python and MATLAB.- Systems Development: Design, development, implementation and validation of digital lensfree imaging system.
