About Earl Fong

I pivoted to scrum and agile project management after stepping off the software engineering path where I spent the bulk of my work life. Working on software was a great intellectual delight, but I was ready to do work that is people- and team-oriented while making use of my technical background. I'm a computer geek who became a people geek.It was a big transition. But then, I've always been good at listening to my instincts in figuring out what to do next. That has served me really well.Strongly prefer to continue with social or environmental impact companies, having particular interests in addressing climate change and in more effective and equitable government. My professional passion is to make the work environments of teams suck less by removing speed bumps, improving team processes and structures for communicating and collaborating, and relentlessly striving for clarity, effectiveness, and producing value.

  • Silicon Valley Project Management
    Scrum Master / Product Owner / Agilist-At-Large
Silicon Valley Project Management Apr 2021 - Feb 2024
    Global Village, Us
We practice scrum in building and enhancing our online presence under the guidance of experienced scrum masters, including a website that serves as a blogging and donation platform.** As scrum master, I focused on the well-being and productivity of the team as a whole as well as individual developers. Initiated, scheduled, and facilitated scrum events: sprint planning, daily standups, review, and retrospective. Worked closely with the product owner to plan and coordinate these.Met 1-1 with new developers as they joined the team, finding out their goals and interests, encouraging communication, collaboration, and pair programming. Followed up over the course of the sprints.Wrote and updated documentation and checklists. Administered access to platforms such as Slack, Trello, and WordPress.** As product owner, I worked closely with all stakeholders to constantly optimize the value produced. Facilitated continuous refinement of the product backlog, ensuring that we always have sufficient sprint-ready items for future sprints. With external stakeholders, discussed and clarified the business value and the context of backlog items. With the scrum team, discussed backlog items to sufficient detail and acceptance criteria that the developers could start implementation. Re-visited and revised the team-wide “definition of done”. Coordinated cross-team dependencies with other product owners.** As coach to the scrum masters, I provided support and professional development. Met 1-1 to provide individual encouragement and support. Participated in building a community of practice that met regularly to share ideas, problems, and successes.Facilitated an internal weekly open agenda meetup where attendees proposed and voted on topics for discussion.

    San Francisco, Ca, Us
Kiva is a nonprofit web platform that enables and facilitates micro-loans between borrowers and lenders all over the world.Worked as a full-stack software developer, which means they threw me a variety of problems and tasks that required technical chops, 8-D Kiva has a bunch of custom, in-house written PHP code that runs on a Linux-Apache-MySql-PHP stack, as well as a Drupal instance for content management, driving a REST api, and hosting a couple of blogs. My accomplishments included GraphQL middleware work, refactoring PHP code, and implementing blogs in Drupal.I loved being part of a organization where the people embrace the mission and are very supportive of each other to push it along.
  • Whole Whale
    Web Developer
    Whole Whale 2014 - 2016

I was happy to be with this purpose-driven web consulting agency whose clientele is nonprofits. The work was enhancing and debugging Drupal modules, troubleshooting various technical issues, and collaborating closely with the technical project manager.I was particularly taken with the client site [ https://powerpoetry.org/ ]. There's a lot of raw emotion, energy, and truth in the poetry published there. I'm very pleased that I contributed to improving this platform as well as other sites supported by our agency.

  • Aquinas Secondary School
Computer Skills Teacher & Pc Technician (Volunteer Abroad)
    Aquinas Secondary School 2009 - 2012
You might think me crazy to volunteer in East Africa in a hot oppressive climate with swarms of malaria-infested mosquitoes.I wore three hats at our school. As teacher, pioneered a course in Information and Computer Studies, guided by the national syllabus. As PC technician, salvaged usable systems from the motley collection of used, donated computers and set up the first student lab. As mentor, coached the use of office suite software, desktop publishing, et al. It was one of the hardest things I've ever done -- and it was the extremely rewarding experience of a lifetime.[ http://www.aquinasschool.sc.tz/ ]
  • Modifieddigital.Com
    Web Developer / Consultant
    Modifieddigital.Com 2005 - 2008
Worked directly with clients and end-users in small businesses and small organizations to provide client-side and server-side web development and programming. HTML / CSS, and a dabbling of Javascript. This was my first stab at being self-employed. The results were mixed, but I really learned a lot, including that I have good communication and troubleshooting skills but suck at sales and marketing.

Found out that in a hot tropical climate, mold can grow on anything, even the plastic surface of a floppy diskette.
