1. ECO & its founder:Recognised among East India’s most prominent environmentalists, ECO founder Bibhudutta Jena’s profession is Law and Passion is Earth. Mr Jena’’s environmental movement started with the inception of Snake Rescue, Orissa’s pioneering Snake Hotline that’s earned him popularity by the name of ‘Snake Man’.Realising the need for grassroots level action, and participation of communities across the social ladder to mitigate Climate Change, Mr Jena formed the Earth Care Organisation. ECO is a people’s movement that’s catching on fast among the masses and classes, alike, thanks to the popularity of Snake Rescue. The awards and press coverage received by the movement in a short span of time, bear testimony to people’s increased awareness about Climate Change, and their faith in ECO. “Climate Change is the first global issue that’s threatening the existence of mankind. Therefore Climate Change cuts across countries, communities, religion and political/financial interests. If there is an appropriate time to act – It’s Now,” says Mr Jena.Vision:1. Rescue/rehabilitation of wild animals and re-forestation initiatives have given ECO a chance to do its bit in conserving Orissa’s most valuable forests - Similpal, Satakosia Tiger Reserve, Ushakothi, Berbara, Chandaka, Rampei Champei, Subasi, Suniamuhni, Khankira, Hatimunda and Bhitarakanika Mangrove Forest. Environmental awareness among the aboriginals living in and around these forests is a part of ECO’s agenda.
