Profile bio

About Michael Eastman

I am a data analyst who thoroughly enjoys applying innovative and creative solutions to environmental challenges. This includes a number of different projects. At the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology I was involved in a project investigating the potential for cumulative logit models to infill an internationally rare hydrological state dataset. After surveying a number of approaches we were able to reconstruct the hydrological regime with unprecedented accuracy. This led to the team and I applying a similar approach to the rest of the UK, having used the initial research to win funding to improve understanding of where hydrological intermittence occurs.I have since joined the Met Office as an Applied Scientist where I am currently investigating the risks of extreme heat events to UK rail infrastructure, and how that is projected to change with climate change. This will form a key part of the work being undertaken by the taskforce commissioned by Network Rail to investigate and make recommendations on how the railway can develop its approach to resilience during hot weather.https://www.intelligenttransport.com/transport-news/137905/network-rail-taskforce-hot-weather-resiliency/

Applied Scientist

Exeter, England, United Kingdom

A member of the Science for Impacts, Resilience and Adaptation team, Michael is involved in applying the Met Office's world-leading science to address customer requirements, across sectors, for weather and climate information. We support our customers in understanding the potential impacts of weather and climate change on their operations, infrastructure, and management/business plans.Currently, Michael is involved in improving understanding of current and projected risks of extreme hot weather events to UK rail infrastructure:https://www.intelligenttransport.com/transport-news/137905/network-rail-taskforce-hot-weather-resiliency/

Hydrological Analyst

Wallingford, England, United Kingdom

I joined the Hydrological Status and Outlooks Group at UKCEH as a Hydrological Analyst in November 2018. Since then I have been involved in a variety of projects. However, my primary research theme is hydrological statistics.I first got involved with UKCEH through my MSc thesis - investigating the potential of statistical models to simulate hydrological dynamics in rivers that cease to flow. My colleagues and I have since developed this work further, simulating intermittence across the UK.I am also involved in frequency analysis of HadUK rainfall data, providing insights into current and best practices for assessing the rarity of low-magnitude rainfall events in the UK. Until now, this has focussed on the ability of a number of statistical distributions to characterise UK rainfall. However, this is likely to shift towards evaluating synthetic time series generated via stochastic processes for characterising rainfall extremes. From intermittent hydrology to rainfall frequency analysis to water quality I am also involved ChemPop, simulating water quality and hydrological metrics throughout the UK using a process-based model. This work brings together a diverse team of experts to evaluate the impacts of hazardous chemicals on populations, ecosystems and ecosystem services as well as their relationships with other pressures in the environment

Graduate Student

The Data Science programme at Lancaster University is practical based, and therefore has already led to me developing a considerable set of skills which I believe will be invaluable going into the future. This includes further development of my R and Python programming skills, as well as application of data pre-processing, exploratory data analysis, data mining (Convolutional Neural Network, XGBoost, and more) and data visualisation techniques. The statistical modules provide valuable insight into the variety of statistical analyses available, and their varying appropriability dependent on the characteristics of the data.Term 2 has an environmental focus, enabling me to continue to develop skills in spatial and geographic analysis via ArcGIS and ERDAS Imagine, as well as gain experience modelling and analysing real, challenging, environmental data.I am currently averaging over 70% on the Data Science programme, and therefore I am hoping to achieve a distinction.

Sep 2017 - Oct 2018

Research Technician - Soil Science

I joined the Aberystwyth University soil science research laboratory on a 6 week contract to aid the research group in analysing soil and leaf litter samples obtained from Ascension Island. The analyses were as follows:- soil and leaf litter pH- organic and inorganic content, of soil and leaf litter, via Loss On Ignition (LOI)- soil conductivity- soil texture analysisWhilst carrying out analyses was my primary role in this position, other roles included sorting, and maintaining samples to enable future analyses to be carried out, as well as aiding laboratory users in carrying out analyses.

Environmental Sciences Marketing And Promotions Officer

A graduate of the Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS) and I were hired on a short contract to analyse the effectivity of the IBERS degree marketing. This position involved: - Extracting and processing confidential data from the Aberystwyth Student Records and Admissions System (AStRA)- Sourcing data regarding similar degree schemes offered at competing European academic institutions, allowing scoping reports for IBERS degrees to be produced- Exploratory analysis of said data to draw comparisons between IBERS and other European institutions regarding course structure, cost, popularity, and other success criteria - Creating and developing a LinkedIn group connecting IBERS graduates with environmental, botanical and horticultural professionals - Designing and implementing an experiment to improve undergraduates' winter tree identification skills

Research Assistant (Voluntary)

Dublin, Ireland

Dr. Jane Stout leads the Plant-Animal Interaction research group at Trinity College Dublin (TCD). Whilst living in Ireland I volunteered at TCD, and aided the research group by carrying out various simple lab measurements, as well as temporarily monitoring and maintaining an ongoing experiment.

Sep 2013 - Apr 2014

Think Big Project Officer

Jigsaw - The National Centre For Youth Mental Health

Dublin, Ireland

The Think Big project was developed between Jigsaw and O2 Ireland in an attempt to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health. Grants and training were awarded to young people who had submitted projects aimed at reducing stigma. However, unfortunately this project was wound down at the end of 2013. I was hired on a short contract to smooth the process, and effectively close the project alongside a small team. This involved:- Helping to organise a music event for those who had been awarded grants to celebrate their successes (120+ young people)- Organising travel to and from the event for all attendees (attending from all over Ireland)- Interviewing applicants for a Clinical Support Worker position - Cleaning data from a shared online spreadsheet- Extracting information deemed to be important from the spreadsheet
