Wisconsin Farms Oral History Project is an initiative of UW-Whitewater's Public History Program, that focuses on the history of food and farming in Wisconsin especially as they relate to race, ethnicity, and cultural diversity throughout the state. We focus specifically on the Milwaukee, Walworth, Jefferson, and Fort Atkinson areas. The project employs a "community-based history" approach, in particular using the practices of oral history. I interview farmers and people in farming communities. I am an undergraduate researcher and the marketing coordinator that promotes events and works on product merchandise such as T-shirts, bumper stickers, etc. The main question we try to answer is, How has food production and food consumption in Wisconsin over the past 80 years influenced community development, in particular with regard to inter-racial and inter-cultural dynamics? I learn to practice history professionally and orally outside the classroom in such venues as museums, historical societies, documentary film making companies and institutions that work on ethnographies and collect folklore and oral history, and local surroundings.
