I am obsessed with the written word. As early as I can remember, I lived for the latest Scholastic catalog drops and chased down bookmobiles like ice cream trucks. My young xennial imagination was shaped by Shel Silverstein, The Babysitters Club, and The Berenstain Bears. When my English Comp teacher, Mrs. Coxwell, recruited me to write for my Jr. High school paper, I realized this hobby had value. My love of storytelling found resonance as a student reporter through High School and beyond, earning me a full-tuition scholarship from The Mobile Press-Register to Auburn University—until a summer internship disrupted that trajectory. While interning at a local paper, I witnessed what seemed to be a trade in decline. The rise of the internet and subsequent downswing of local newspapers rocked small-town newsrooms across the country. Career-weary journalists affirmed for me that pursuing the career path would be risky and far from lucrative. With no way to grasp the potential and unprecedented landscape the World Wide Web would eventually create, squandering my future on a non-lucrative passion pursuit was a luxury I couldn’t afford so I shifted my sights toward a higher-earning career in business.That decision led me to a thriving career in HR, working with industry giants like PepsiCo, Owens-Illinois, and Sara Lee, where I developed a deep understanding of the business, policies, and politics of corporate America. Rising from generalist to management and director-level roles, I gained invaluable insights into the day-to-day realities of the frontline hourly wage workers behind the S&P reports—stories that numbers alone can’t convey. After a decade, I came full-circle back to my passion—again at a time when journalism is at a crossroads. So, here I am—writing, telling stories, and feeling more fulfilled than ever. Not a single experience as been wasted. Whether spotlighting entrepreneurs shaking up the system for ESSENCE or uncovering leadership lessons from boardrooms as a C-Suite reporter for Business Insider, my reporting is shaped by lived experience, perspective, and a deep sense of purpose. My earned experience in generalist, manager, and director-level roles spanning industries from tech to F&B serves my audience well. At the heart of my work is a simple truth: behind every number, headline, or trend is a human story that deserves to be told.
