My primary interests are focussed on understanding the role played by glutamate in mediating behavioral changes induced by immune activation. My current research efforts have demonstrated that immune activation leads to increases in glutamate concentration in subcortical brain regions which in turn bears strong correlations to behavioral symptoms. I believe that modeling the mechanisms by which inflammation engages glutamate neurotransmission would help in identifying more precise targets in the glutamate pathway which in turn could lead to new treatments. A major limitation in translational efforts has been our inability to differentiate the physiological from the pathological alterations in glutamate signaling. Immune mediated changes in glutamate neurotransmission might provide us with a useful platform to understand these differences and better exploit them for new drug developments.

Associate Professor Of Psychiatry And Behavioral SciencesEmory University Sep 2019 - PresentAtlanta, Ga, UsI am now focused on identifying the adverse effects of chronic inflammation on the aging brain in depression. Towards this end, I study the effects of inflammation on promoting neurodegenerative changes among middle-aged depressed subjects. The goal is to identify and treat modifiable risk factors such as inflammation to prevent acceleration in the process of aging. I am actively funded by NIH, foundation, and institutional grants. I serve on NIH Review Committees as a standing member. I am a member of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP). -
