Stand-in period continued 3 week periods on a 6 week cycle.Responsibilities included ownership of the stations engineering functions, the establishment of a project management department to undertake all capital expansion projects, the development of a skill and succession management plan.Major undertakings included:• Ensuring that the capacity to execute the stations capital expansion plans (+/- R180M) for the current year was in place.• Motivating and obtaining approval for the 5-year technical plan (+/- R530M) and the 40-year life of plant plan (+/- R9 000M).

: Appointed Project Manager for the remainder of the R160M Fabric Filter Plant construction contract. Total works outstanding at the time was R34M.My duties included ensuring that the remaining construction works were completed within time, budget, quality, safety, environmental and legal requirements as stated in the contract between Eskom and Bateman-Howden SA. Managed the interface between the various contractors namely Siemens, ABB, Johannes-Moller SA, Steinmuller SA, Howden SA, Concor and GEC to name a few.

I was also the team leader/co-ordinator of the Fan and Filter Functional Plant Group (FPG). This FPG is a self-directed work team, which is accountable for the draught plant fans, the air heaters, the fabric filter plants, the stack emission monitoring systems, and the gas path ductings including the chimneys. This team consists of the systems engineers, the various maintenance technicians (i.e. from the electrical, mechanical, and instrumentation disciplines), an operating support specialist, and representatives from the project department.Furthermore, I am a trained facilitator in the Reliability Centred Maintenance Process (RCM II) and therefore responsible for the implementation of the entire RCM process within this FPG.My responsibilities with respect to the above within this group include the following:• Co-ordinating all activities of this group• Ensuring that the RCM implementation program is completed satisfactorily• Responsible for the feedback to management regarding all aspects of the FPG• Accountable for the R1.07M engineering budget of this FPG• Partially responsible for the R1.98M maintenance budget of this FPG

As part of the Station’s Succession Planning and Young Professionals Development Program, I was one of four candidates given the opportunity to gain production management exposure. Each candidate was given a three-month exposure period, with full delegated authority, with mine beginning in February 2000. My responsibilities/duties included:• Member of the Power Station’s Senior Management Team• Co-ordinate, plan and direct all Operating, Maintenance, and Engineering activities to ensure that Business Unit production and cost targets were achieved• Manage short term planned and forced outages and ensure the successful return to service of units• Provide the daily production plan and manages all unit production issues• Assist the Energy manager in controlling the daily trading and bidding activities for respective units• Maximise production and efficiency at minimum cost• Control re- and de-commissioning activities• Chairs and direct plant forum meetings• Approves and directs incident reports for investigation• Temporarily excused as FPG co-ordinator for the official 4 month exposure period• Responsibilities as System Engineer was not suspended during exposure period• I am currently the standby Production Manager

I was initially employed as the systems engineer of the Reverse Flow Pulse-Jet Fabric Filter Plant. It is an alternative to the Electrostatic Precipitators that are situated at the back-end of +700 MW coal fired boilers. My primary function is the resolution of problems associated with the operation and maintenance, and optimisation of performance and maintenance, by the upgrading of plant via the application of technical knowledge and skills.I was accountable for the functioning and reliability of the Stack Emission Monitoring System and the reporting of the station’s monthly emissions into the atmosphere to the Dept. of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT) in terms of the Power Stations Environmental Management Policy – Air Quality.My responsibilities with respect to the above include/d (but not limited to) the following:• Commissioning of the fabric filter plant• Commissioning of the stack emission monitoring system• Program and interface management between mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and control and civil contractors, production and operations management and contract supervisors• Investigations into the effect of new operating regimes on plant health• Member of the Steering Committee involved in the fabric filter plant research program with Eskoms in-house research and development division (Eskom TSI)• Investigations into operational incidents• Designated Project Manager for the R1,80m stack emission monitoring contract for units 4 to 6.My involvement included the compilation of the enquiry, evaluation of the tenders, contract negotiations, and finally the management of this contract to completion w.r.t time, cost, and quality• Member of the Station’s Environmental Management Committee

I was employed as an engineering technician for the mechanical engineering services department in their cad section.The department is primarily responsible for documentation.My duties involved mainly:• The investigation and management of engineering change proposal.Engineering change proposals are requests that are made by the relevant authorities to amend, update, investigate alternative solutions, etc. to problems that they are experiencing on locomotives and wagons.• The loading instructions (if possible) of “abnormal loads” of consignment to be conveyed on our rolling stock.• The updating of drawings that exist on tracings etc. onto the 3-D cad system.• I also assisted in the partial training of new personnel (as well as P1 & P2 students) with respect to drawing office practices.

I spent the 3 months redrawing existing datapacks for production purposes onto the cad system (AutoCAD 12). The work involved the inclusion of design changes and updates for the Rooikat combat vehicle. The design change proposals were investigated by myself and other members of the team and were implemented after approval by a special committee.

My duties included the overhauling of pumps, gearboxes, conveyors and high speed packaging machinery. I also assisted in the maintenance program of boilers and compressors.I was involved in a project pertaining to the commissioning of a new soap plant. My involvement was to prepare schematic layout of the existing plant, prepare general and detailed drawings of custom built equipment and draw up a complete inventory of all the equipment used in this plant. This information was used for the costing and planning of a new plant on another site. This plant was commissioned in 1995.
