About Esteban Cabrera Durán, Ed.M.
My work as an educator is anchored in the cultural and linguistic knowledge, strength, and wisdom of school communities. As an educator, I leverage student's cultural and linguistic knowledge in instruction and foster positive dispositions towards bilingualism and self. As an emerging school leader, I seek to organize schools that leverage this knowledge to advance student academic success and critical consciousness, as well as prepare teachers to effectively engage in these practices to create affirming and effective schools. I recently received an EdM. in Educational Leadership, Organizations, and Entrepreneurship from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. I am excited to support the ongoing work at Chelsea Public Schools, supporting teachers, coaches, and school leaders in improving academic and social outcomes for multilingual learners. My academic interests lie in bilingual education as a theory, a framework and series of methodologies as well as a critical pedagogy. Beyond bilingual education, I am interested in the professional lives of queer and trans educators and recently, queer and trans school leaders of color. While distinct, these two areas of interest are succinctly related–how schooling institutions can best bring out and leverage the capital communities carry with them to schools in order to advance social justice for marginalized communities. Prior to becoming a teacher, I organized for a Student Bill of Rights in New Mexico, published an article on recruiting and retaining teachers of color, and wrote an original senior thesis on the experiences of queer and trans educators of color in K-12 public schools.
Listed skills include Community Organizing, Teaching, Curriculum Development, Spanish Translation, and 22 others.
