Profile bio

About Erik B.

I routinely take and offer guidance from three questions: 1. What do we think?2. What do we mean?3. How do we know?Commercial products and IP have come out of my work in electrophotography, consumer electronics, X-ray analytical instruments (X-ray sources, detectors and other components) and the development of archival optical data storage (the "M-disc"). I have adapted, designed, constructed and/or coded various tools in service to my work, including optical instruments, interferometric devices, manufacturing equipment, multi-physics data-logging devices and laboratory test automation systems. I am currently a partner in a scientific instruments components development company.Since early 2016, I have been engaged as the principal scientific investigator at the infamous "Skinwalker Ranch" site in the Utah Uinta Basin and have conducted a low-profile observational science program there. Owing to my appearance on the A&E HISTORY program, "Secret of Skinwalker Ranch," I have seen a lot of "link" requests and notes from well-meaning and credentialed individuals on LinkedIn. Thank you for reaching out. I don't mean to seem unperceptive. I am acutely bandwidth-limited and haven't been as responsive as I might like to be. I am working with Brandon Fugal and our team to create the right channel, the right "portal," for constructive communication on that topic. Please bear with us...Some of the activities that have accelerated progress in my work are computational modeling (FEA electromagnetic, thermal and mechanical, RBD, Ion-transport), coding and scripting (Python, VB, C++, others), automation of laboratory test and data-acquisition assets and the development of means and methods for thin-film deposition and metrology. I have never regretted allocating time and resources to the development of hardware and software tools that can be repeatedly pressed into service.I welcome contact from any LinkedIn account for the purpose of introduction, though I generally limit permanent contacts to those with whom I have had a collegial or other working relationship. I *do not* maintain other social media (e.g. FB, Twitter) accounts.

Listed skills include Patent Portfolio Development, Physics, Optics, Spectroscopy, and 40 others.

Director, Co-Founder

Current

Us

This is my company and my sandbox. The primary focus has been on development of advantageously novel components for use in X-ray analytic systems. That effort has had mainly to do with the development of ultra-thin film-based X-ray transmission windows.1. Scientific instrumentation and methods development.2. Computational modeling.3. Software development.4. Product manufacture and test in clean room environment.5. Collaborative technical writing (grants, patent docs).

May 2012 - Present

Director Of Applied Physics

Us

Non-partner R&D role at ML3 Scientific.1. X-ray products research and development.2. Production equipment design, fabrication and use3. Analytical tools development.4. Computational modeling.5. I.P. development.

Dec 2010 - May 2012

V.P. Of Engineering

Provo, Utah, Us

Consulted with a privately-funded team of experts from academia in the field high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in its formative stages. 1. Mechanical design.2. Test fixture design and fabrication (light machining, assembly).3. Marketing / branding.

Mar 2016 - Jul 2016

Independent Physics Consultant

Microray, Llc.

Consultant for electron-optics and high-voltage enclosure design for compact X-ray devices targeting XRF, heavy-metals detection and Imaging applications. Consultancy with this technology startup began and abruptly ended in early/mid-2015, due to anti-competitive litigation initiated by another company against my client.1. Finite element analysis / electron-beam modeling.2. Test-fixture design.3. Prototype functional / destructive analysis.

2015 - 2015

Independent Physics Consultant

Cj'S Toybox

Electron-optics design for miniature X-ray tubes potentially targeting one or more of the following applications, common to the industry: X-ray fluorescence (XRF), environmental and consumer-products heavy-metals detection, imaging, etc.1. Novel product concept development.2. Finite element analysis / electron-beam modeling.

2014 - 2015 ~1 yr

Laboratory instrumentation development.2. Data acquisition and analysis.3. Software development.4. Computational simulations / studies.5. Technical writing.6. Technical presentations to science advisory board and other visiting parties.

Aug 2011 - Aug 2013

Lead Scientist

Millenniata

A then unprecedented work in the field of digital archival optical data storage, giving rise to a new form of DVD-format media, immune to the effects of "data rot" (corruption) over comparatively-long timescales. The nominal longevity target was one-thousand years. The "M disc" is now an industry-standard product.1. R&D lab management, coordination of researcher activities.2. Inorganic optical materials research and DVD laser write-strategy development.3. Data acquisition, automation and tool development.4. Manufacturing support and environmental testing.5. Public representation, I.P. development, patents, white papers, publications.

Failure analysis and design-driven yield enhancement.3. Finite-element analysis, electron microscopy, EDAX and XRF analyses.4. Semiconductor device (JFET) mask layer design scripting.5. I.P. development, publications.

Oct 2003 - Nov 2008

Development And Test Engineer

Us

Valuable practical experience in the realm of electrical engineering as well as in the dos-and-don'ts of product development. Ultimately a significant and fateful distraction from my graduate studies, but an adventure in whimsical consumer-electronic product design.1. Circuit design, modeling, prototyping, functional and failure analyses.2. Autonomous battery test laboratory setup and management.3. Screen-room EMI spectral analysis.

Mar 2000 - Aug 2003

Associate Engineer

Lexington, Kentucky, Us

An early career experience upon my return to Lexington from two years in post Soviet-era Eastern Europe. The focus was my role in a 5-member "think tank" department at Lexmark, in pursuit of novel printing technologies and investigative methods for their vetting at the R&D level. 1. Printing technology research and development.2. Particle charge-to-mass spectrometry tool development.3. FEA and BEA-based semiconductor printing device design.4. Time-domain simulation of experimental semiconductor printing devices.
