I came to a career defining moment not in a design studio, surrounded by mood boards and espresso shots, but in the cacophony of an environmental protest in IstanbuI. While, dodging paper placards, escaping from paper gas, I realised I needed to be in the creative industry. Why?The power of creativity to reshape behaviours, bridge divides, and bring together people who couldn't agree on a pizza topping, much less global issues. Witnessing that lit a fire in me. I was skilled and could use my creative skills for positive!My degree in political science was as helpful as a chocolate teapot in landing a creative job - so I took some graphic design lessons and started practicing. Lessons were learned, skills were honed, and before I knew it, I got myself a position at a startup as a graphic designer. From humble beginnings creating digital ads that probably nobody clicked on, to the dizzying heights of designing the experience of a global retail giant (here's looking at you, Getir), my journey was more 'unknown-to-somewhat-known' than a classic tale of transformation.As I navigated my way from freelancer to product manager in London, launching my own design studio along the way, I had a bad feeling, like when you know you lost forgot something. I had drifted away from my initial spark of inspiration. I was good at making people want things they didn't need, but the thrill of the craft had faded. The realisation hit me like a poorly designed website: I was part of the problem. In a world heating up faster than a microwave meal, simply doing no harm isn’t good enough.I read somewhere, “If we are not part of the solution, then we are part of the problem by default”. After this point, my career, much like a boomerang, swung back to its starting point. Better late than never, indeed.Now, my days are dedicated to learning, teaching, and creating brands and experiences with sustainability at the core.
