Graduate Teaching Assistant

Athens, Georgia, United States

I offer more than 4 years of experience in teaching undergraduate students’ organic chemistry. In addition to teaching this course, I also conducted a scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) entitled “chemistry in the real world”. On this project I worked with my organic chemistry laboratory students to explore the impact of introducing real world applications of organic chemistry experiments on the overall student’s interest to the subject. On this project, I would start my lab sessions by providing a short real-life scenario depicting a real-life problem solved by an experiment students were about to perform. In addition to that, I would also give my students an opportunity to research and present real world applications of specific organic chemistry experiments to the rest of the class. Through this study, I learned that indeed, having students do what they think is significant makes them very excited and less intimidated about organic chemistry. Conducting this study prepared me to test the impact of active learning strategies in my own classroom in a scholarly way which is a skill set I need to be an effective collegiate chemistry professor. I was recognized and awarded with two “Outstanding Teaching Assistant Awards” and “Future Faculty Fellowship” by the University of Georgia (UGA)’s center for teaching and learning (CTL) as a result of my excellence and dedication in teaching undergraduate students.

Research Assistant

Atlanta, Georgia, United States

Under Dr. Kimberly Jackson supervision, I investigated the antagonistic effects of dietary dibenzoylmethane (DBM) and mifepristone (RU -486) on GR signaling. I was able to determine that treatment of LNCaP and DU-145 prostate cancer cells with DBM in conjunction with the GR-inhibitor RU-486 sensitized prostate cancer cells to die presumably by apoptotic cell death. Through this research, I have mastered many molecular and cellular biology techniques such as mammalian cell culture, transient transfections of GFP-AR, cell viability and proliferation assays, RT-PCR, westerns, and AR/GR immunofluorescence.

Research Intern

Boston, Massachusetts, United States

Under Dr. Nika Danial mentorship, I investigated the role of BAD in glucose dependent Carbohydrate response elements binding proteins (ChREBP) activation. My work investigated how the liver senses extracellular glucose to cue its utilization and conversion to lipids via de novo lipogenesis. While the storage of glucose as fats is important for the proper adaptive responses, excess of de novo lipogenesis is associated with several pathologies including type II diabetes. Given the role of glucokinase (GK) in hepatic glucose sensing and ChREBP activation, as well as the ability of BAD to modulate GK activity, we hypothesized that BAD regulates ChREBP activity. To test this hypothesis, I investigated the effect of BAD on ChREBP activity using luciferase reporters containing carbohydrate response elements (ChoRE) and promoter sequences recognized by ChREBP. My data revealed that ChoRE reporter activity is diminished in Bad-/- compared to Bad+/+ hepatocytes. These data indicate a cell autonomous function for BAD in regulation of ChREBP transcriptional activity.

Research Intern

Baton Rouge, Louisiana, United States

I had the opportunity to work with Dr. Crystal Johnson on antimicrobial activity of erythromycin and plankton extracts against clinical and environmental vibrio. The main goal of this research was to discover new natural products with biological activity from marine microorganism. We hypothesized that new microbes found in lakes and oceans and in marine biofilms can be brought into culture using new methodologies Although, we made attempts to identify the minimum inhibitory concentrations of plankton extracts from the university lake, none were in concentration range to act as bactericidal.
