Since 2006, I have been Mayor of the city of Heidelberg - known as a cosmopolitan, international city with flair, science location and environmental capital. The issues of sustainability, climate protection and environmentally compatible urban development are very important in my work - and I am also involved in these issues as a member of the board and presidium of the German Association of Cities and Towns, a member of the board of the Baden-Württemberg Association of Cities and Towns, and on the Baden-Württemberg State Advisory Council for Sustainable Development. At the international level, I have been involved for years in networks such as C40 Cities, the European Covenant of Mayors Board and ICLEI. As President of the European "Energy Cities" network, which comprises over 1,000 cities in 30 countries, important sustainable development issues can be scaled up to the highest level of the European Union. Through the acquisition of conversion sites, Heidelberg has growth potential that will enable our city to develop in a sustainable manner and create space for sustainable transformation, innovation, and creative urban design.
