  • Election Navigator
    Creator, Producer, Spokesperson
    Election Navigator Mar 2014 - Dec 2014
In 2014 Austin was to have its first election under the new 10-1 system, with 10 geographic districts plus an at-large mayor. The 11 races drew 78 candidates. Concerned that with the high number of candidates running and the focus on small districts, the environment and other city-wide concerns could lose priority. I put together a team to create a data-rich set of branded multi-media election tools that included a searchable database of all candidate environmental questionnaire answers, YouTube channels with professionally produced video interviews of candidates for each race, and infographics to summarize who answered the questionnaires and who won the environmental endorsements. Contracted with 3rd party designers to develop customized graphics for each district and assets. This was all funded through two successful crowd-funding efforts raising nearly $22K. I also co-moderated the televised Mayoral runoff debate.

Creator of starter gardener program to get more food growing inside our city, simultaneously reducing the food miles associated with feeding ourselves, increasing the amount of fresh, healthy food consumed by people of all income levels, and empowering people to see themselves as an important part of the food system. Many people are interested in the Grow Local/Eat Local movements, but most don’t know where to begin. CG is a manageable start that involves attending 10 hours of basic gardening instruction and apprenticing for 10 hours alongside more seasoned gardeners. The Basics class covers seasonal planting, bed preparation, composting, rain-water harvesting, and much more. Upon completion, attendees become official Citizen Gardeners. Graduates take on growing at least some of their own food, as well as supporting local farmers’ markets and farm stands, looking for local and organic labels when shopping, and advocating for good food policies. After co-developing the curriculum and program, branding and successfully marketing it for more than two years I arranged a transition in management to the Sustainable Food Center. The program has produced 100s of Citizen Gardener in Austin, resulting in 100s of public, private and community gardens being planted and SFC has now franchised the program to other cities.
