General Description of Responsibilities:This position is responsible for performing management work under the direction of the Deputy Fire – EMS Chief. Captains shall coordinate fire suppression, rescue and emergency management activities, and other emergency and non- emergency operations. Work performed includes supervising and personally performing on-scene emergency operations, staffing, scheduling, manpower allocations, planning, organizing, coordinating and directing projects, procedures, reports, and directives; ensuring cooperation among stations and personnel; evaluating programs, personnel performance, and the achievement of goals and objectives.In an operational capability during a 24-hour shift, incumbent may be in charge of overseeing fire suppression, emergency medical services, rescue operations, pre-fire planning and fire and life safety prevention and education, public relations, and other emergency and non-emergency scene activities. In an administrative assignment on an 8 hour shift 40 hours a week, the incumbent is responsible for overall management of a significant work bureau, function, or specialized project or assignment and participates in administrative and technical assignments, special projects, and committees as assigned.This position also serves as the on-call Staff Duty Officer on a rotational basis and as the Public Information Officer when required. Captains are subject to rotation and may be assigned to either the Training/Safety or Operations Divisions.

General Description of Responsibilities:The Fire-Rescue Lieutenant is responsible for managing the daily operation and maintenance of a fire and rescue station and the personnel, apparatus, and equipment assigned to that station. Lieutenants serve as company officers supervising a crew of full-time, part-time career and/or volunteer Firefighter/Medics and/or Firefighter/EMT’s assigned to a station for an assigned shift. Lieutenants supervise the crew and station apparatus dispatched to emergency scenes, including fires, medical emergencies, motor vehicle accidents, hazardous material incidents, etc. Lieutenants will also supervise the projects assigned to their station personnel and insure that they are completedwithin the required time frame.Lieutenants will directly report to a Fire-Rescue Captain and will assist the Fire-Rescue Captain with Scheduling, In-House Training, and other duties asrequired. The Fire-Rescue Lieutenant shall stay abreast on current issues ofinterest to the Fire and EMS community including, but not limited to, lawchanges, patient care and other topics of concern.Fire-Rescue Lieutenants are subject to rotation through any assignments forwhich they are properly credentialed, including temporary and backfillassignments in field positions. Lieutenants are also subject to function as ActingCaptain in the absence of the Captain. Lieutenants may also be assigned tocertain staff positions, having responsibility for managing, coordinating andoverseeing major departmental administrative functions including trainingprograms, personnel, recruitment/retention, and logistics / safety. In allassignments, a Lieutenant’s work is performed under minimal supervision.Supervision is exercised over company personnel, generally consisting ofsubordinate non-ranking personnel.
