By tweaking some jobs, monitoring others, and temporarily modifying batch files to restart failed jobs, I was able to stabilize the system. There was no need for a single database restore once I took over the system. I also provided complex reports for the business, as well as guidance on how to use ProCede.

Client company migrated their functionality from mainframe to PC, using SQL Server as their back end. My responsibility is to write a wide range of stored procedures to extract data from the new SQL Server RDMS into tables and reports,so that current processing and reports can emulate earlier processing as closely as possible, to minimize the disruptions inherent in moving to a new system. Technical tools used: T-SQL, SSIS, SQL Server Database Engine Tuning Advisor for the extracts, and SQL Agent Job Scheduler to schedule regular extract runs.

Part of a team developing a complex client-server-host application designed to store all and retrieve all significant information on all risks insured by the company for ten previous years.Primary data was stored in Sybase database and replicated to mainframe IMS database. Front end was PFC-based PowerBuilder.

Made revisions to VANTAGE-1, a mainframe-based insurance underwriting system, using COBOL, CICS, and VSAM, to accommodate in-house requirements. Aetna had bought the system and needed to modify it to suit its own processing needs. Worked directly with end users, and therefore performed both programming and analysis roles.

Part of a team converting several major mainframe systems to run on PC using Micro Focus COBOL. Assignment included converting systems written in COBOL, Assembler, DB2, and VSAM to equivalent PC systems. Also had responsibility as technical writer, documenting the entire conversion process and providing instructions to users. Also, taught courses in MicroFocus COBOL.

Made revisions and customizations to the VANTAGE insurance processing system, to enable the system to handle the requirements of various companies purchasing and using this system. Responsibilities included analyzing changes required for the customers’ processing needs both from the business and technical perspectives, and coding, testing, and documenting these modifications. All aspects of the system were included, from the V-1 major processing modules to the Repetitive Payment System, and everything in-between.Also helped create a PC-based interface to the mainframe system. The interface was written in MicroFocus COBOL Dialog Systems and Visual Basic. The system requested and captured the required data, and emulated a CICS terminal in communicating this data to and from the mainframe.

Supported development of a policy processing system. My primary function was to adapt the mainframe COBOL code to PC-Based MicroFocus COBOL; but company was a start-up, so everyone had to handle multiple roles, depending on whatever situation came up.
