General Manager National OperationsTegel Foods Ltd Dec 2017 - May 2020Auckland, Auk, NzReporting to the CEO, my role as the GM of National Operations is strategically focused on developing and growing the business in a complex environment. Comprising both strategic business planning and extensive management of all Tegel’s national agricultural, manufacturing, safety, distribution, and logistics operations, I am responsible for the entire vertically integrated supply chain; from breeder flocks, through to the delivery of finished products to customers. Accountable for the overall performance of budget, production, safety, animal welfare, DIFOT and people, my role-specific achievements are outlined below -ACHIEVEMENTS- Championing H&S culture through visible leadership of a safety-first culture as well as implementing improved staff on-boarding and training, which has led to a reduction in recordable incident rates.- Successfully gaining export certification across all sites and consistently attaining MPI’s top-level audit rating.- Maintaining a consistent fresh order fulfilment of 98.5%.- Restructured the Agriculture team; bringing in new skills and internationally successful methods to help deliver world-class feed conversion rates. - Sourcing and delivering new farms/farming assets to enable Tegel’s growth.- Identifying and growing our talent through a range of channels to create opportunities for people to grow and develop; forming high performing teams, restructuring where necessary, and taking an active role in individual and collective bargaining.- Providing guidance and leadership to Tegel Site Managers enabling them to develop cohesive regional management teams with 30% of the teams reporting along national lines outside of the region.- Providing hands-on leadership and governance of the shop floor led continuous improvement process (SIMPLIFY!) designed to give people a voice to improve safety, quality and cost performance of the business. In 2019, I successfully delivered $4M in operational savings around this process. -
General Manager Operations (South Island)Tegel Foods Ltd Mar 2014 - Jan 2018Auckland, Auk, NzIn 2014, I was promoted into the GM Regional Operations role where, in addition to my Site Manager responsibilities, I was given accountability for livestock operations, logistics, and distribution. Achievements attained in this role are outlined as follows -ACHIEVEMENTS- Successfully secured the delivery of a new multi-million dollar breeder farm.- Drove health and safety awareness across the region and managed to significantly reduce the recordable incident rate.- Actively maintained professional working relationships with 31 contract growers through the NZ Tegel Growers Association, as well as managing fruitful relationships with hatcheries, feed mills, and nine breeder farms (470 people).- Took an active role in the listing of Tegel on the ASX and NZX (New Zealand’s largest IPO in 2016), including leading tours of the operation for interested parties.- Asked to lead the continuous improvement process (SIMPLIFY!) -
Site ManagerTegel Foods Ltd 2006 - Apr 2014Auckland, Auk, NzPromoted to the Christchurch Site Manager position in 2006, this role encompassed oversight of all day-to-day operations in the Tegel poultry processing plant, smokehouse, as well as a Tegel rendering operation. In addition, I also held operational management responsibility for site engineering, as well as all safety and quality functions, and the leadership of approximately 350 people. ACHIEVEMENTS- Took ownership of a 2007 rebuild project after a catastrophic fire, which required$25M of capital work completed and was commissioned within nine months.- Led the 2011 earthquake rebuild of the Christchurch Tegel freezer. This project comprised the coordination of $8M of work and was completed within six months of the earthquake. (One of the first significant builds post EQ). The project was a huge undertaking and involved building a new chilled fresh distribution centre, demolishing the existing infrastructure, and building a new 2400 pallet space for frozen storage. Another significant win during this project was my successful management of the mission to salvage millions of dollars of frozen goods from the destroyed freezing facility.- Leading several national projects, including the implementation of a scanning and labelling system (INNOVA) to label all finished goods and manage raw materials in the incoming warehouse. This new system provided traceability from incoming products to finished goods.- Took a proactive role in both collective negotiations with unions and individual employment agreement bargaining. -
