Since 2006, as the Publisher, I’ve overseen the entire operation of Energy Times magazine. This includes editorial, layout and design, printing, circulation, distribution, advertising sales, website development and all other aspects of the production of a consumer health and nutrition magazine. In 2017, we added a second magazine, Discover Life. This is a custom publishing product intended to exclusively promote the Nature’s Plus product line with no outside or competitive advertising. Targeted towards younger demographics and to promote an active lifestyle. Seize the moments of your life.Last year we undertook an effort to monetize our exclusive content beyond the limited scope of traditional print distribution. We developed a digital and paid advertising strategy with the objective of increasing visibility and engagement by disseminating our content across numerous social media platforms (Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, TikTok). As part of this, we contracted with a search engine optimization (SEO) consulting vendor to increase our Google search results. In an effort to help our advertisers reach the greatest number of consumers digitally we offered partnered content in the form of e-blasts. These entail emailing an advertiser’s message (or offer) to our database of consumer email addresses. To make this as effective as possible we track the responses to everything we send to our entire database (190,000 names). Then, we focused on list segmentation. Anyone that responds gets put into a separate “engaged” database. By repeatedly measuring the responses we’re able to — over time — grow the engaged database by several factors. While the normal response rate on our emails to our full database is in the low range (0.5% - 2%) the response rate of our engaged database is an impressive 20%+ rate — and as the engaged database grows — the respondents increase.

In 2010 I created the in-house advertising agency for Nature’s Plus. The Ad Group included artists and copywriters from both the Energy Times and Nature’s Plus. We produced all of the advertising for the entire line of Nature’s Plus products. Prior to that, Nature’s Plus used outside ad agencies to create all their advertising. This saved the company over $100,000 annually.

Created a B2B newsletter, Healthy Profits, aimed at health food stores that purchased both Energy Times and Nature’s Plus products. This 16-page newsletter was focused on helping retailers market and increase product sales and was a joint effort between Energy Times and Nature’s Plus. Also, I annually produced media kits that included Editorial Calendar, Readership Profile, Demographic data (based upon semi-annual consumer surveys) and Rate Card.
