UK based position working in the Industrial Design team for Psion, a leading manufacturer of rugged mobile computers. The unique challenge at Psion is designing mobile products that balance aesthetics, appeal/beauty and brand with durability whilst maintaining good ergonomics and function. My primary responsibility in this role is the design of new rugged/durable PDA’s, hand-held terminals and vehicle mounted computers that are commonly used by mobile workers in industries such as supply chain and logistics, field service and transportation. Working closely with both the mechanical team and programme/product managers, I am heavily involved in the entire design process for new product development (NPD). Responsibilities include management of projects, concept generation and ergonomics, rapid prototyping, cosmetic models, sample purchasing and customer research/end user trials. My broad sets of skills also incorporate complex CAD surfacing and graphic illustration which enable me to integrate and apply corporate brand requirements to this process. Products I have had key roles within include the ‘WorkaboutProG3’, ‘Omnii XT10, XT15 and RT15’ and the ‘EP10’.

My time as a mechanical Design Engineer was spent working on bespoke mechanical solutions for rugged hand held computers. Having to manage and communicate with colleagues in France, USA and Canada I worked on multiple projects right from Concept with free hand sketching, block models through to CAD, Detail Design and on, to Tooling. I played key roles as an individual as well as part of a team to provide solutions to the integration of varying applications, such as speakers, scanners, RFID data capture, smart card and finger print readers.

Working for Avon Protection I was part of a team, bidding to win the contract to re-design the British military gas mask. Through out the 13 month’s I was given individual projects, made responsible for a small team to produce a large quantity of prototypes, attend key meetings as well as concept generation and evaluation, prototype manufacture and validation and report writing.
