Raising the Bar: Healthcare’s Transforming Role (rtbhealthcare.org) developed a comprehensive set of principles for how the healthcare sector can advance health equity and help achieve optimal well-being for the people and communities it serves. Raising the Bar identified key roles played by healthcare as a provider of care; employer; community partner; and advocate/investor, and defined 14 concrete actions healthcare organizations and leaders can take to advance health equity. The effort was funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and housed at the National Alliance to Impact the Social Determinants of Health. As Project Director, I oversaw a multi-faceted initiative involving research, evidence gathering, ideation and consensus development relying on multiple partners, a diverse set of experts, and intensive efforts to learn from people with academic, professional, and lived experience.

As a Senior Scholar at AcademyHealth, I worked with colleagues on research at the intersection of public health and health care delivery, with a particular focus on evidence that moves the health system toward interventions addressing social determinants of health and other "upstream" policy approaches. AcademyHealth works to improve health and the performance of the health system by supporting the production and use of evidence to inform policy and practice, and is the professional home and leading national organization for health services researchers, policymakers, and health care practitioners and stakeholders.

Served as President and Chief Executive Officer of the de Beaumont Foundation, leading initiatives to strength and transform public health in the United States. • Focused the Foundation’s work on three strategic priorities: 1) strengthening the work of public health agencies at the state and local levels, 2) increasing the ability of public health officials to engage in policy and partnerships with other key players in their communities; and 3) developing new approaches for communicating about the value of public health.• Amplified the Foundation’s visibility and impact. Built strong networks and partnerships that made the Foundation a central player in the US public health system. • Significantly expanded de Beaumont’s signature programs, including the BUILD Health Challenge, the Practical Playbook, and initiatives to develop the public health workforce.• Led initiatives to elevate the importance of policy as a public health tool, including the launch of CityHealth (CityHealth.org). This high visibility/imact program identified key health-related policies, rated the status of laws in cities throughout the US, and launched campaigns and partnerships to accelerate adoption of these policies.• Managed the Foundation’s grant making, communications, operations, and management, including a significant portfolio of convenings, white papers, and other mechanisms for providing thought leadership in the public health community.• Instituted steps to transition the management of the Foundation from its beginnings to a more sustainable, transparent, and professional model.

+ Served on the Senior Leadership team for CDC, then a $10 billion, 15,000 person Agency operating globally and in every state, engaged with Center and all aspects of CDC’s program.+ Provided strategic advice to multiple CDC programs and initiatives. Trained and mentored an extended network of scientists and policy officials throughout CDC.+ Directed Congressional and other Washington engagement, and served as CDC's Legislative Director. Led CDC's policy and Congressional engagement through the H1N1 and Ebola pandemics.+ Led a multidisciplinary team of analysts, health professionals, attorneys, communications and legislative specialists that serve as a bridge between scientific programs and policymakers.+ Designed and directed execution of legislative, policy, and communication strategies in Washington. Served as a principal spokesperson for CDC to the Washington policy and health advocacy community. + Directed CDC’s participation in hundreds of annual briefings, technical consultations, and Congressional hearings.+ Managed high-profile responses to Congressional oversight.+ Translated CDC’s science for Washington audiences by effectively simplifying and articulating scientific and programmatic information for non-scientific audiences.+ Translated the policy and political context of Washington back to CDC’s scientists and leadership, identifying key trends and opportunities for public health engagement.+ Served as a resource to members of Congress, congressional staff, and officials throughout the policy community on public health issues.
