Ed Knapp work experience
A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Chief Pilot
I was specifically hired to add the SF-340 to the Operation in the fall of 2011. I began the project in November and the aircraft began revenue service in March, 2012 (4 months later). I then held the Chief Pilot’s position until Mach of 2014. In addition to the normal duties of a Chief Pilot managing crewmembers and serving as a line Captain when necessary, I Developed and oversaw the hiring and training plan for a major rapid expansion (25 airplanes in 18 months) after the addition of the SF-340 to the fleet. Thereafter, the Company became IOSA certified. I oversaw the certification relative to Flight Operations.
General Manager
While working as General Manager I initiated and completed the Company’s FAR 141 Training Program for Private Pilot and developed the Instrument Course which has since been approved. I also served as the Chief Instructor for the Flight School and as Chief Pilot for the FAR 135 portion of the operation as well as the Drug and Alcohol Program Administrator. I developed and maintained a rapport with the FAA and TSA to is currently enjoyed by all parties.
Assistant Federal Security Director
I was hired at TSA rollout to develop and oversee the Regulatory Inspection Department for the Connecticut Office. During my tenure, I was responsible for recruiting and selecting the Inspectors that worked in my department. Annually, I developed a work plan for the department and ensured its completion. Additionally, I served as the acting Federal Security Director during his absence leaving me with responsibility for all TSA-CT operations including screening, law enforcement and administration. The Department’s areas of responsibility included, compliance and enforcement at flight schools, air carriers, airports, railroads and voluntary compliance in all other transportation modes within the state of Connecticut. The department was also responsible for the approval and maintenance of the Airport Security Plans at our assigned air carrier airports.
Vp Flight Operations
Responsible for all areas of the Operation including Inflight, Dispatch, Flight Operations, Scheduling and Record Keeping. I addition to the day to day operations, I was responsible for the addition of the SF-340 to the fleet. The Company very quickly added several 340s to the fleet which required rapid expansion of all departments under my supervision. The addition was very successful and the Company continued to expand notwithstanding the challenges posed as a result of 911.
Chief Pilot
While serving as Chief pilot for Express One I was responsible for the operation of the DC-9 and B-727s operated by the Company. Shortly after I began as Chief Pilot, I was able to significantly reduce pilot attrition which had been a problem prior to my arrival. I accomplished the reduction by convincing management to roll an annual retention bonus which was normally paid in December of each year into the compensation system that was in place. This served as a raise in the Crewmembers' monthly salary and significantly improved morale. Additionally, I spent much time at the various crew bases which were in several locations in the US and Europe enabling me to have direct contact with crewmembers.I also served as an Instructor and Proficiency Check Airman (simulator and aircraft) as well as a Line Check Airman and Line Captain when necessary. My responsibilities there were Crew Scheduling, Flight Department staffing and the usual Chief Pilot administrative duties.
Various
I worked for several Companies during this period mostly startups or Companies that were in the process of expansion or turnaround. I served as Director of Operations in three of them and as VP of Flight Operations in a startup that did not fund to begin service although we had completed the certification process. Most notably during this period, I recertified Kiwi Airlines which had been grounded by the FAA in the mid 1990s. The process was complete within approximately 3 months while the Company continued to operate through agreement with the FAA since the recertification process was ongoing.
Chief Pilot, Director Of Operations And Line Captain
I was hired as Chief Pilot and was the first employee of the original Company, Atlantic Air, which eventually became Business Express. I worked with the original owner of the Company to certify the airline since it was an offshoot of another company owned by him. During my tenure I held several positions:• Chief Pilot - June 1980 through November 1983• Director of Operations - November 1983 through November 1987• Designated as Air Carrier Examiner - May 1985 through February 1992• Director of Flying/Chief Pilot - May 1990 through July 1992• BAe-146 Line Captain - 1991 through May 1993• Check Airman on all Aircraft (PA-31, BE-99, BE-1900, SD-3, SF-340, Bae-146) o PIC on all aircraft
