I am in the fourth year of an MSci biology degree at Lancaster University, I have an interest in plant biology, ecology and population biology with a focus on the what can be done to maintain biodiversity. My interest in ecology was fostered via the Lec145 module about biodiversity and conservation and Lec165 module on marine and estuarine biology during my first year, as I discovered an enjoyment for sampling and analysis of those samples, and in the potential real world application of this subject area. Moving forward I would like to gain experience within the field of ecology in order to increase my subject specific skill set, to gain this experience I am interested in work experience, internships and jobs within ecology and conservation.During the summer after Year 12, I completed a Nuffield Research Project that involved me completing a literary review that focussed on diabetes and its biomarkers. This helped me to develop my organisational skills and my ability to research unfamiliar topics to gain a greater understanding. Additionally, in this time, I attended a virtual work experience where I had to produce an informational poster about the effects of climate change that had the chance to be shown at the COP26, and which I was given a specific commendation out of the many people involved.I have previously worked as a trampoline coach, in this role I have developed my teamwork, leadership and time management skills. Teamwork is required as a trampoline coach to work alongside other coaches to deliver a safe and rewarding session to the gymnasts. Leadership is often required in this role as I was often working with less experienced colleagues that needed guidance on how to set up equipment, coach skills, and interact with the gymnasts. Lastly, time management is necessary as sessions are a set amount of time long, so to ensure sessions are engaging you must plan ahead the timetabling of the sessions.
