Volunteer Programme Coordinator (While Running Via Volunteers)Fikelela Child And Youth Care Centre May 2014 - Mar 2020Khayelitsha, South AfricaFikelela Child and Youth Care Centre is a children’s home in Khayelitsha which houses children that have been abused, abandoned, neglected, orphaned or combinations thereof. Many of these children had emotional and behavioural issues associated with childhood trauma, and learning challenges relating to ADD, ADHD, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Disorder and low IQ. My wife & I focussed much of our work and personal time to this home and personally ran the full-time Monday to Friday volunteer programme.• Assisted with a weekly Enrichment Programme at Fikelela and provided IT support for all lessons. These lessons focussed on improving basic maths and English literacy, improving fine and gross motor skills, and improving confidence and self-esteem. Consisted of approximately 25 (English second/third language) children, aged 4-12 years old. Listened to stories, sang action songs, movement, learnt new things (gained knowledge), dealt with social issues etc. The 6-12 year old children stayed on after the 3-5 year olds left, to work on Maths (SA CAPS curriculum), Jolly Phonics and vocabulary. Other activities included: art, science, games improving social interaction, music & drama.• Organised, coordinated and accompanied Fikelela children and volunteers on numerous outings. • Served on the Fikelela Child & Youth Care Centre Steering Committee from 2018-2020• With approval from the Department of Social Development (South Africa’s Social Services), the Fikelela Social Worker and the Fikelela Management Team, my wife and I developed and ran a weekend sleepover programme at our home for the older children (6-12 year olds) at Fikelela from 2015 through to 2019. We hosted two or three children for one or two weekends each month on a rotational basis. We also taught and reinforced many skills such as social, communication, respecting self and others, participation, friendship and resolving conflict.
