Research ChemistN. Regioal Research Laboratory,Usda Feb 1962 - Aug 1978Our mission at NRRL(USDA) was to develop products and/or processes that could be commercialized. My research group modified starch and evaluated them for applications as paper additives, adhesives, additives for making biodegradable plastics, and other applications. From this group came the first "super-absorbent". I worked on some modifications of the original formulation and process. Also, studied using starch as an encapsulating agent for pesticides and herbicides to reduce pollution and a as slow release process. We also investigated fundamental chemical research as to the mechanisms of chemical reactions. This lead to my discovery of a new structure which theoretical chemist had predicted could not be formed. It turned out to be stable at room temperature and could be formed by two methods.
