For the past decade I’ve been capturing stories in my community. During COVID lockdowns I interviewed and wrote my mum’s biography. That was the single most meaningful and healing work of my life. Understanding where I came from and the trauma I’d inherited from both mum and dad’s lineages helped me break down the walls I’d put up and recover my creativity and self-expression. Working as a volunteer and capturing the life stories of people in palliative care made me realise that when I’m close to my last breath, I want to have expressed everything I had within me. I started becoming more creative (and set aside time for creative projects). I wrote my life story to pass down to my daughters. That opened so many more possibilities for me to bond and deepen my relationship with my family and my community.I’m here to tell you that you too can set boundaries around your creative work with clarity in a way that your people will appreciate.
