Guy comes up to me some time ago, asks “So what makes you a critic?”. “Well for one thing,” I said, pointing at his collar, “I regret your choice of tie.” Well-considered views, presented clearly, succinct and grammatically correct--that’s the ticket and the proper approach to film criticism, responsible analysis of any discipline and of course writing in general. Should an opinion be called for, it will be informed and critical, perhaps with a dash of humour, yet respectful and tolerant. If technical writing is required, it will be rigorously researched and presented. Same with social media: as important—check that, vital—as online commerce and communication has become in our lives today, I believe the above principles could, should and must be applied to all platforms for everyone's benefit. This is the most productive way to interact, the most successful strategy to sell and the best way to live. The cover photo above?
