I was responsible for commercial lighting controls with applications in office and bank, retail, schools and universities, industrial buildings and warehouses. Primary goal of the controls was to reduce waste associated with unused lighting. In executive office and meeting spaces, the primary goal was easy to use controls that allowed user to tailore lighting to meet their needs.

Redesigned standard neon product line to conform to UL 2161 safety standard. Supervised UL testing and submissions, beta test sites, and production releases. Wrote financial justification for needed capital that included custom modeling, sales forecast, financial calculations, and executive summary.

Responsible for redesigning core and coil assemblies to reduce material cost through standardization, reducing steel and copper usage, production scrap and warranty returns. Employed transformer equation based design program to estimate core stack, primary and secondary coil turns, material usage, and physical dimensions. Employed accelerated life testing to validate high voltage insulation systems. Employed standardization of secondary coil design to minimize winder setup time, reducing setup scrap, production labor and improving winding productivity. Fully tested prototypes to the applicable UL and CSA safety standards, applied for listing/certification, reported test data, and attained listing/certification. Common testing included electrical performance, rise-by-resistance temperature measurements of coils, and temperature measurement of enclosure under various conditions, including short circuit. Fully tested insulation system of primary and secondary circuits using overload and hi-potential methods as specified by the safety standard. Supported daily operations of the plant regarding material substitutions, change requests, drawings, and process specifications.
