I had the opportunity to intern with ASPIRES, sponsored by San Francisco State University, with four other engineering students assisted by graduate student Kevin Yamada and faculty advisor Dr. Hao Jiang, in which we experimented with Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). We designed, constructed, and optimized a CNN which was used to operate our autonomous robot for image classification. We trained our custom CNN using our generated 60,000 image dataset and compared the performance to a standard CNN. In addition to our research, we developed midterm presentations, conducted literature reviews, and produced an academic article.
