Cisco Systems, Inc. -- Richardson creates VOIP collaboration products. With Cisco, I have created, enhanced, and supported various database subsystems for both on-premises and cloud based product and service offerings. Following are a few illustrative impacts from some of my roles here.Delivered a 40x reduction in our on-premises product's upgrade times. The new logic analyzed the source data and generated SQL code to create single step Export, Transform, and Load SQL statements for the Informix engine to execute. This processed tables instead of individual records while still performing record-content-appropriate data migration at the field level.Designed and built a high-performance DB schema for a directory services prototype. As sole database developer, I met with product engineers to turn requirements into an efficient data model. Scripted pipeline processing to convert graphical design tool output SQL into CSV file schema "drops" needed by UI developers.Created an Informix-to-PostgreSQL conversion tool saving us staff years in delivering a Cloud Calling product with feature parity to our popular "Big Business" on-premise system. This enabled us to use, (and for a period, stay in sync with), the existing 150K line Informix code base of our successful CCM on-premises VOIP product. The resulting PostgreSQL database schema and the converted, trigger-fired business logic, became the starting code base for our new system. Proposed, designed, and delivered an "In-Place Upgrade" facility making possible a DevOps continuous integration / deploy model. It supported schema deploys while the DB remained fully available. Previously, an "Upgrade B, Swap, Upgrade A" sequence was used which was brittle, included a read-only period and down time, and temporarily sacrificed fault-tolerance. My new approach eliminated maintenance windows and reduced Ops cost.Provided design and query guidance preventing or resolving countless system performance bottlenecks.

The company produces custom crystal art and gift products using sub-surface laser etching to reproduce both 2-D and 3-D scan images within solid crystal pieces. Increased production capabilities and streamlined business and operations processes while reducing costs. Built a small IT staff by cross-training production group employees. Directed and contributed to development and integration of a system comprised of PHP, MySQL, and some C++ based applications. This system delivered a fault-tolerant, secure, EDI compatible, production support infrastructure capable of quickly and reliably handling the daily graphics and data intensive order load. Provided and administered an internal network of Microsoft and Linux based computers to host and operate the new system and to support non-production operations activities such as network storage, email, and print services.

RSI / Freebie provided Electronic Targeted Marketing services. We utilized business intelligence driven personalized offers and POS POP integration, with point program incentives, to retain and boost clients' customer sales. Our clients included Blockbuster, Inc., American Golf Corp., AMC Entertainment, Inc., Carlson Restaurants Worldwide, Brinker International, Southland Corp., Metromedia Restaurant Group, Farm Fresh Groceries, Giant Superstores. My and my group's responsibilities were the definition, development, and operations of Freebie's proprietary DBMS driven transaction processing and marketing system. I and our CTO personally designed and developed the core architecture. Our system examined real-time transactions, analyzing prior offer responsiveness, to select a new offer likely to promote incremental activity. The personalized incentive offers and updated account balance totals were returned for printing alongside the customer's receipt. Our pioneering electronic global incentive currency based membership program maintained balances and outstanding personal "Smart Offer (SM)" information for over 93 million accounts. The cross-client service offering included auctions and such as web based customer interaction. An Oracle/Linux based OLAP system supported backend program performance reporting and marketing strategy analysis and planning.The Freebie Electronic Database Marketing System utilized data distribution and replication, with asynchronous message queuing, across networked, functionally subdivided, n+1 redundant, load balancing, high end PCs. The final product delivered, at a fraction of the cost of mainframe or other solutions, a reliable, linearly extensible system capable of processing over one half billion transactions annually, generally with sub-second response time, for over 42 million active users, at over 4500 store locations, with busy hours exceeding 1.5 million transactions.

(Inbound / Outbound call center systems developer & provider.)Directed development, continuing engineering, and support of all non-call-switching related software systems. Provided both leadership and hands-on architectural and technical guidance for my groups. Reduced support costs through re-architecting and unifying the back-end database and administrative systems for the company's contact center product offerings. The resulting UNIX/Informix based system supported the Administrative Configuration, Call Detail Recording, Predictive Dialing Analysis, and Call Scripting requirements for both the ACD and the Outbound Call Center product lines. Responsibilities included planning, administrative, and overhead functions of budgeting, feature definition, platform selection, development environment selection and setup, scheduling, custom feature RFP responses, customer interaction, documentation, product release/installation packaging, and support assistance.

Directed, and contributed alongside, our teams of software engineers in the development of a full-featured tandem circuit switching system. Designed, produced, and oversaw development of the Call Processing Subsystem, the Administrative Interfaces Subsystem, and of the CDR Processing Subsystem. My involvement spanned product life-cycle phases from early in the system design through to aiding in pre-sales customer presentations, system delivery, installation, and support.

Developed Software Integration and Test Procedures for Honeywell's use in founding the a new test organization to handle an intended voice / data PBX development project. Determined and documented requirements for group startup, test philosophy and procedures, and embedded product test fixtures. In a joint venture agreement with L. M. Ericsson, AB of Sweden, project planning was altered to leverage Ericsson's existing MD-110 system and incorporate into it the needed data handling capabilities. I transitioned into our development team, completing extensive Data Communications coursework and training on Ericsson's internal engineering systems. Worked on-site with Ericsson engineers in Stockholm training them and developing OSI model compliant pads in EriPascal for various data device support requirements.

Provided custom software development services in support of microcomputer system sales. Designed and developed a general purpose database manager from scratch, (no such software existed for the small business microcomputer environment at that time). Despite 8K memory limitations, the product utilized data dictionaries to provide basic customized schema handling and relational query capability. This software provided Vanguard a competative advantage due to its being a reusable foundation facilitating the address of different customers' unique requirements.
