My responsibilities in the lab include data cleaning, coding, data collection, reporting, interaction with patients, and task administration. During data weeks, a normal day in the lab would be inputting data in different databases, coding data, and checking data for mistakes. During weeks where they are participants in the lab, I help to set the computer games up with all the equipment and read the instructions for the games to the kids. Diversity Student Summer Research Opportunity Program- Research Intern
During the summer of 2016, I was a part of the Diversity Student Summer Research Opportunity Program in the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. During the eight weeks that I was there, I was paired with my mentor, Dr. Michal Melamed,MD and assisted her in updating a Systematic Review and Meta- Analysis of randomized controlled trials that focused on the Effects of Dairy Intake on Insulin Resistance. I was able to learn about all of the different steps in putting together a systematic review such as working with a team that included a medical librarian, going through databases and using EndNote to sort those which were relevant, abstracting articles for important data, and using statistical software's to input the data and calculate the mean standardized differences and their 95% confidence interval. Using randomized controlled clinical trials, we compared the effects of dairy foods versus a control group on the following outcomes: weight, waist circumference, and insulin resistance. Our results were that dairy intakes has a positive effect on insulin resistance, waist circumference and weight in obese/overweight individuals. According to these results, it is important that individuals incorporate dairy products into their healthy lifestyle.

During the eight weeks at this program, I participated in workshops and lectures about study skills, different careers in the health field, learned about the different organ systems in the body and how health disparities affect our health care system and met influential health care professionals in various fields. I also had the chance to participate in a dental lab and participate in a weekly Problem- Based Learning group where we were given a case and had to diagnose and come up with a treatment plan for a hypothetical patient. Finally, conducted a project to implement a health intervention in the poor areas of Los Angeles.
