Hello there, my name is Eden and I am a registered Dental Hygiene Practitioner (DHP) from Kelowna British Columbia, Canada. I completed my Bachelor of Dental Science at The University of British Columbia in May 2020 and worked for 3 years as a dental hygiene practitioner. In early 2023 I moved to the Gold Coast of Australia, pursuing my dream career of becoming a dentist, as I have a passion for individualized healthcare and I am eager to expand my scope of practice, furthering my professional skill set through a Bachelor of Dental Health Science & Masters of Dentistry. As a healthcare provider, I believe that it is my duty to provide and increase access to safe, equitable & competent oral & overall healthcare by considering clients’ social determinants of health and chief concerns.During my 7 years as a DHP student & practitioner, I have honed numerous skills to aid me in the dental field as a healthcare provider including the following: - Leadership: Throughout my years in primary & secondary school I was active in leadership clubs, a peer mentor & captain of the field hockey team, and in post-secondary continued on as a peer mentor, all of these experiences provided me opportunities to inspire & support younger generations & have been the most rewarding adventures. Personally, as a mentee I received some of the most impactful wisdom from other leaders in my life, which instilled a passion for providing guidance and support to others, ultimately aiding in the development of strong communities!- Teamwork: In a dental office the phrase “teamwork makes the dream work” is incredibly accurate & something I would quote daily working in a private practice setting. During this time my co-workers and I supported each other by collectively contributing to sterilization procedures, charting & documentation, 3D scanning & radiographs, and covering patients. Our strong communication skills as a team led us to seamlessly manage any unexpected tasks. - Adaptive Communication Skills: As a dental hygiene practitioner I promptly developed an ability to be flexible and adaptive in my communication skills to ensure my clients each felt they were receiving individualized & empathetic care. Dental settings can be extremely anxiety-inducing environments and by working with many marginalized populations including; individuals in long-term care facilities, incarceration, and HIV positive & AIDS individuals I was able to provide positive experiences for these populations & allow them an opportunity to have autonomy over their healthcare.
