Investigating surface modification techniques of organic polymers for improved bioactivity of implantable devices. In particular I developed plasma surface modification using plasma immersion ion implantation of polyether ether ketone as an isoelastic orthopaedic replacement for titanium.

This position primarily required the design and construction of a hand held accelerometer/gyro tool to map positional data and tremors of subjects with Parkinson's disease. This data was then required to be transmitted via Bluetooth to an android device allowing for portability.To achieve this, proficiency was required in: electronics, including analogue and I2C data transfer; rotation matrix arithmetic; and programming using C in an Arduino environment and Java in an Android environment.

Developing novel adhesive free polymer bonding to create hermetically sealed devices for implantation. Leakage of bodily fluids into implantable devices with delicate electrical components, such as Cochlear implants, is one of the major factors in early failure. In this position I developed a method for modifying the surface layer of an organic polymer using plasma immersion ion implantation. The modified surface was capable of autohesion, and was tested for water leakage under a range of conditions.

One of the most common and untreatable morbidities resulting from mastectomy surgery is that of developing a lymphoedema. In this position, I developed a programme in IDL to statistically analyse the post surgery lymph flow of Patients at risk of secondary Lymphedema. Patients at risk of lymphoedema could be successfully identified with a high degree of accuracy and reliability. These patients could then be offered improved counselling and offered treatment options to reduce the lymphoedema before it presented itself, resulting in improved quality of life outcomes.This work was performed under the supervision of Professor Dale Bailey and culminated in a poster presentation at the ANZSNM conference in Darwin 2011
