About Ed Howarth

I am a UK-based qualified actuary, working since 2009 as a consultant providing advice to defined benefit pension schemes. This has included working for a range of pension schemes in different industry sectors and of varying size and maturity, and providing advice to both trustees and corporate clients. My experience and interests cover areas such as:- Actuarial and consulting software. I currently have UK-wide responsibility for the ongoing development and delivery of Willis Towers Watson’s transfer value calculation software, Pension Valuer - Transfer Module, which forms a core part of our client solution for GMP equalisation. In the past I have held local office responsibility for Willis Towers Watson’s Sharepoint-based content-sharing portal for clients, OnePlace.- Process improvement. I lead teams with the responsibility of developing, promoting, and implementing efficient and consistent internal processes across our UK Retirement practice to deliver two of our core services to clients: individual member calculations, and Pension Valuer (our suite of tools providing a GMP equalisation solution for UK pension schemes)- Individual member calculations, including transfer values, retirement quotations, AA and LTA calculations, with strong knowledge of relevant statutory checks and anti-franking requirements.- Risk management and incentive exercises, including carrying out bulk trivial commutation exercises, enhanced transfer value exercises, pension increase exchange, and buy-ins.- Funding and valuation advice, including involvement at all stages of the triennial actuarial valuation process, journey planning, de-risking, and regular monitoring.- Communicating complex ideas in simple language, both to client and to members of pension schemes. In particular, I have previously worked on a number of benefit change projects as a helpdesk operative responding directly by phone and email to individual member queries about complex changes to their employment benefits.- Pension accounting disclosures for UK companies under IAS19, FRS102 and ASC715 for both UK accounts and to feed into consolidated results for global organisations.- Valuing share-based awards offered by companies to their employees. In the past I have worked on a small specialist team performing fair value calculations under IFRS2 for share-based award schemes.
