I am interested in environmental policy and on-the-ground monitoring of environmental issues with an emphasis on field research. As well as this, I am interested in taking advantage of community outreach and non-western conservation methods to tackle significant issues in innovative ways. These areas align with my interests and skills and are critical for the health of us and our planet. I am currently doing a Bachelor of Arts/Science at the University of Newcastle, majoring in biodiversity, conservation, politics, and international relations. I work in a bar and have a history in hospitality and other customer service industries. My current job bartending has helped me develop skills that will aid me in my future work as an environmental scientist. In my job, I deal with inebriated and emotional customers. To avoid conflict, I must communicate with them professionally and effectively using my communication skills of persuasiveness and conflict resolution. By doing this in a controlled manner, I can avoid and resolve these situations. This has resulted in developing a good relationship between me, customers, and other employees, as well as great customer and boss feedback. My university study is also aiding in my preparedness for my future career, especially in digital literacy. During a field-based assessment in a core science course, I had to collect, present, and analyse data found in the field. I presented clear, concise, and practical written and graphical information using Microsoft Excel and Word skills. Because of this, I received a high distinction in that course.
