About Eric Dilley
I am a Habitat and Fish Monitoring Specialist at Research Corporation of the University of Hawai'i (RCUH), where I lead and manage projects that mitigate the loss of coral reef habitat from human impacts and invasive species. With over eight years of experience in marine research and education, I have a Master of Science degree in Marine Biology and certifications in scientific diving, divemaster, and nitrox. My core competencies include scientific writing, biology, science, and subtidal research. I design and conduct underwater SCUBA surveys, field experiments, and lab trials that examine the effects of coral outplanting, invasive algal management, and predation and herbivory on the reef community. I also communicate and collaborate with stakeholders, partners, and students to share the findings and implications of our work. My mission is to understand and protect the diversity and resilience of coral reef ecosystems in Hawai'i and beyond.

Rapid Response Coordinator
Habitat And Fish Monitoring Specialist
I supervise a team of DAR technicians to manage and execute two projects in Kāne‘ohe Bay and Waikīkī that mitigate for loss of coral reef habitat from the R. V. Cape Flattery grounding and the DOT Kapalama Shipping Terminal expansion respectively. These projects serve to conserve and restore coral reef habitats by managing invasive algal spread and outplanting nursery-raised corals.
Graduate Teaching Assistant
I am currently teaching in the Spring 2016 semester the BIOL 301L Marine Ecology lab course. Students use a combination of field based observations and lab exercises to learn about ecological principles in the marine environment. During the Fall 2015 semester I taught BIOL 265L Ecology and Evolutionary Biology lab course. Students in the course use statistical analyses of collected field data in excel to answer their own ecology research questions.
Research Assistant
Worked on invasive lionfish research at the Bahamian island of Eleuthera. Assisted with graduate research projects that examined various aspects of the fish community and how they are affected by invasive lionfish. I was personally responsible for the group lab project looking at prey responses to invasive lionfish predation vs native predation and took charge of collecting the prey and predators necessary for lab trials.
Marine Instructor/Educator
I taught K-12 marine science education programs in the San Francisco Bay Area related to local marine and estuarine habitats and organisms. Programs include trips to schools, on site activities, and voyages aboard the R/V Robert G. Brownlee which provide hands on activities with animals related to various local habitats.
Laboratory Assistant Iii
Assisted in data collection at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Mitigation Monitoring Project for the Marine Science Institute at UCSB. I personally was responsible for conducting surveys to estimate abundance and density of kelp forest fishes, giant kelp, understory algae, and large mobile invertebrates. I also drove and navigated project boats to survey sites on a regular basis. I was also responsible for the upkeep of research vessels and equipment used to collect project data. Additionally, data entry of all project data was a primary responsibility of this position once data collection was completed.
Research Assistant
With the MCR LTER I provided assistance with various long term quadrat and photo surveys as well as manipulative experiment construction and deployments. During the field season, I was assigned to work with the Russell Schmitt and Sally Holbrook on their research projects all around the island of Moorea. Additionally I was given the opportunity to work on my own study that examined the survival of small pocillopora corals on Gump Reef just offshore of Gump Research Station in Cooks Bay.
Independent Undergraduate Researcher
While working for the SBC LTER, I executed my undergraduate thesis which examined the effects of habitat complexity on sea star predation.. This project included field data sampling of predation frequencies for local kelp forest sea stars as well as laboratory handling time trials to determine predation duration for specific sea star prey species. All funding and support for this project came from the SBC LTER and the URCA undergraduate research grant at UCSB. This project culminated in a written thesis and my B.S. in Aquatic Biology with Distinction in the Major.
Research Assistant And Nsf Reu Intern
Assisted with marine ecology research at the SBC LTER which examines the relative importance of coastal and ocean processes in structuring kelp forest ecosystems. At the SBC LTER, I worked as a volunteer, research assistant, scientific diver, and REU intern. Duties included various project tasks from collecting subtidal kelp forest field data (kelp and invertebrate abundance) to sample processing and data entry in the laboratory.
