Edith Holbrook Riehm, Ph.D. Email and Phone Number
I bring my passion for teaching, my compassion for students, and creativity and flexibility to the classroom each day, in order to engage and encourage students in innovative, meaningful, thoughtful, and respectful ways, so that they become willing, active, and successful participants in the learning process. In helping them develop the necessary skills and knowledge for success as students, I also support them as emerging responsible and caring adults in the community.I have successfully taught the United States Survey and/or World History Survey courses at three metro-Atlanta institutions: a local branch of Shorter University, Georgia State University and, most recently, Kennesaw State University. Each of these experiences has afforded me the excellent opportunity of teaching a diverse population of students from across the world, from Atlanta, and from all sections of Georgia. The study of history is critical for success in the global community in which we all live and work. Twenty-first century technology provides educators virtually unlimited means to engage students and make the study of history more compelling, while simultaneously helping students improve their critical thinking, writing, and presenting skills – all of which are transferrable and necessary for any course of study or career. History is constantly unfolding as new evidence is discovered to enlarge or revise the historical record. In my classroom I consider each of my students to be an historian, and I design the class assignments so that students may experience that role as they research topics, answer questions based on the critical evaluation of evidence, and present their findings. My teaching style provides an atmosphere in which curiosity is encouraged and I provide positive and constructive feedback to students so they build confidence and find their own voice in contributing to class discussion.
