Mind blowing high technology and therapies, such as catheter based aortic valve replacement (TAVI), robotic mitral valve repair, robotic coronary artery bypass grafting and minimal invasive coronary artery bypass grafting. Performed by world-class physicians, from The Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, USA, Austria, Spain, France and Italy. All working together to serve the community of Abu Dhabi and beyond to provide advanced care which the people of the UAE would have otherwise no access to in their own country.

In my role of charge nurse I am responsible for the day-to-day smooth running of OR activities. My day begins with evaluating the list of planned surgeries for the day. This includes ensuring that the patients are ready for surgery, surgeon is available to perform the surgery, anaesthesiologist and perfusionist are available and the operating room is cleaned, and prepared with the appropriate equipment for the planned surgery, and a competent operating room staff is assigned.By about 7:00am, an ‘informal’ gathering takes place and the staff receives a report. The report focuses on the number of cases, the scheduling of patients into the specific operating rooms, patient’s readiness, staff availability, and any other pertinent information relating to the scheduling of the patients for surgery.My role is to gather information from all sources and communicate this information to the appropriate personnel. Communication is of paramount importance to safe patient care and smooth running of the OR activities.To help with this process I not only communicate but record relevant information on a public display board.The board is a visual representation of the operating schedule, staff assignment, and any other information relevant to the surgery. Besides managing the personnel under my supervision some of my other activities include staff education, competency testing, scheduling, and other administrative duties such as data collection and statistics.I set high standards for safe patient care, especially as the majority of our patients are neonates, infants and children undergoing complicated cardiac surgery.
