My piano students can testify to my dedication, commitment, and high professional standards in my teaching, which have attracted so many serious students of all ages to this studio. My love of music and desire to share it in my work inform all the lessons and dictate the choice of repertoire to best develop the technical and musical skills of the student. One proof of success is that students come into their lessons smiling and leave smiling, not always because they have been perfectly prepared but because they have been supported in their efforts to improve and encouraged with specific strategies for practice. The choice of repertoire is critical to success, and students need to enjoy the music they study and be able to tolerate the stages of the learning process knowing it will be worth the effort when it is finally polished and ready for performance. I believe it is critical to engage the student's imagination throughout the learning process and to integrate as much theory as the specific music and the student's level will allow. In this way the understanding of the music's character, moods, harmonies, keys and structure, formal sections, and dramatic climaxes will impress the student in several dimensions and encompass a broader conception of the musical work. I remind my students quite regularly that "I practice what I preach" because they must realize that my advice on how to practice results from my own experience as a student and as a musician who continues to play on a daily basis. With students who are studying very advanced repertoire it is necessary to be able to demonstrate exactly the requested improvement in order to make the necessary point quite clear. It is only in continuing to pursue my own love of music through playing on a daily basis that I am able to communicate this enthusiasm to my students and to pass along to them the great tradition of excellence in pianism and musicianship which was handed down to me by my teachers.
