I am a scientist with more than 20 years of experience in the field of mathematics cognition research, learning, and assessment design. Over the years I have been awarded major grants and led cross-disciplinary project teams of learning scientists, psychometricians, assessment developers, technologists, and practitioners. I have expertise in automated item generation (AIG) and item difficulty modeling, learning progressions/trajectories, and, more recently, prompt engineering as applied to mathematics.While advancements in generative AI have certainly been impressive, the mathematical computations and reasoning produced by generative AI can be inaccurate—and these inaccuracies have equity implications for mathematics learners. As a cognitive scientist, I am curious about how different forms of AI can be effectively combined to improve accuracy and reduce the frequency of “mathematical hallucinations,” as well as how learners using AI can be can be supported in understanding its strengths and limitations.My goal is to engage learners with mathematics in fun and challenging ways, and technology can play a powerful role here, when guided by learning sciences principles.Speaking of technology, here is how I created the graphic in my background image: First, I input parametric equations for spirographs into a graphing calculator. Then, I set the variables in the equations as sliders and adjusted them until I generated an intriguing design. This graphic demonstrates how mathematics can be applied in ways that could capture the imagination of learners.
