As a Book Group Leader I engaged all male alternative high school students in participating in book groups. Our weekly groups consisted of the reading and discussion of culturally relevant literature as well as the writing of poetry prompts. LFAU carefully selects books which mirror the experiences of its students. Some of the award winning authors I covered in my groups were Luis J. Rodriguez, Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes, and Lucille Clifton. Reading these writers gave our group the opportunity to discuss sex, substance abuse, youth incarceration, race/racism among other subjects. I also made sure to create the flexibility to implement the students' book suggestions as well as the space for them to vent their own personal turmoils.

I worked in SER's PODER youth program, which focuses on setting junior high students onto a college track. As a Learning Facilitator I produced and facilitated curriculum on diverse subjects such as Native American history, healthy nutrition, poetry writing/performance among others. I brought in guest speakers and organized field trips that enhanced my lessons. The foundation of my classes was to ignite critical thinking, interaction, and motivation to learn new things.By incorporating classroom agreements that both the students and I composed, we established an environment where youth were free to express themselves, grow through employing cooperative learning tactics, as well as hold themselves and each other accountable for their actions.
