In 2000 UPC decided to create a director position reporting directly to the COO for the strategic management of its main suppliers. UPC’s annual CAPEX budget had been over 1500 M€ and the negotiations with stratigic vendors had been handled on a CEO level so far. The newly created department negotiated a range of agreements with substantial better conditions to the overall organisation. Processes were implemented to manage the validity of strategic purchases and materials management for these goods was put in place.Prime focus included the closure of vendor-financing deals that resulted in a substantial financial contribution to the UPC bottom line.In 2001 focus was added to OPEX related areas such as maintenance agreements and professional services

Started in 1995 with the objective to build a supplier management department including procurement and logistic processes in a start-up company. This responsibility was extended in 1998 with the manage-ment and control of the entire AUCS transport network facilities and as-sociated budgets (>300 Million Euro). These costs covered all international bandwidth trunk expenditures as well as the voice interconnects costs for international termination and European national access facilities. Major cost reduction projects have been initiated to reduce these costs including the aggressive use of upcoming competitive new suppliers in Europe and the planned implementation of a high speed ATM transmis-sion backbone in 2000.The department of about 25 staff managed all network supplier relations (equipment and international bandwidth including associated contracting), the transport network planning and the voice supplier management team. The voice supplier management team created and managed a pan-European “Least Cost Routing” traffic model. The team negotiated several interconnect agreements with various suppliers in different countries all over the world. Part of the department was located in the UK and all teams had to co-operate closely with the various network management work-centres across Europe.Extensive monthly reporting was required to senior management (CEO, CFO and COO) as well to the AUCS supervisory board.In 1999 appointed as acting VP Network Engineering & Operations and a member of a management team of 3 to replace the previous VP and managed several company wide major reorganisations.
