Started programming at age 14 on a 6502 based micro with 4K RAM and a blistering 1Mhz clock. Wrote my first hand-assembled machine language program on that machine, realizing just how much faster it was than BASIC. Learned about computational complexity while writing my first Mastermind color peg guessing game (the predecessor of Wordle!). Became attracted to nonstandard CPU architectures, AI, compilers, and programming environments in my undergrad, where I met Herb Simon. Interviewed for both AI and compiler jobs and I was thrilled to accept a job in compilers/RTOS/simulators directly out of school. Always wonder which path the AI direction would have taken - would I have survived the second AI winter of the early 1990s?I've had the pleasure of working with brilliant people and fascinating projects in my career. Mainframes, micros, DSPs, custom VLIW architectures. I had the extreme luck to have mentors that were there 'in the beginning' and always learned something from every story they told.At the CMU spinoff Tartan, I was able to sharpen my technical and soft skills thanks to a team of dedicated professionals sharing the same entrepreneurial vision. The acquisition of Tartan by Texas Instruments opened new doors into leading system architecture for 150+ top-notch engineers across 7 cities and 4 countries.Leaving TI behind was difficult, but the time was right to start my own company. I had "What would you do if you weren't afraid?" written on my whiteboard for 2 months while wrapping up the closure of the Pittsburgh office and starting SDS. The fascination of SDS is not only working with our 20 engineers but the 200+ engineers and project managers at the customer teams of our many projects. Every new project is a chance to engage with bright people and build fascinating technologies. I've enjoyed every minute.Growing and then selling SDS has been a great ride, and now I find that I'm the 'old guy telling stories'. I hope my mentees appreciate the stories that I tell now.
