Chief Engineer on a high profile charter Feadship cruising the Mediterranean and Caribbean. Project managing $3-5M yacht maintenance and refit periods. I create the work lists, put out RFQ's to contractors and work with the yacht owner’s team to control the budget prior to entering a shipyard. Upon arrival I manage both my own team of engineers and contractors. I determine their projects from concept through to commissioning while maintaining contracts and taking ownership of the budget for the engineering department. I provide engineering knowledge and experience to move the yacht forward technologically. These responsibilities straddle mechanical, electrical, satellite communications and some specifically marine engineering disciplines. Each of which I have the qualifications and experience to make the right call and ensure the client gets the best possible outcome.

MCA Small Vessels Chief Engineer, <3000GT, <9000kWAs a team leader I bred a culture of shared learning and wanting to push things forward. Diamond was an old boat when we arrived as a team and over 4-5 years we had improved, updated or outright replaced all critical systems. Often doing things "properly" meant doing things the hard way, but the result was always excellent. She is one of the best "old" yachts out there, something myself and all other crew members are immensely proud of. The goal for improvement was to take any open loop, unmonitored, unconnected or unsafe system and deliver a closed loop, PLC driven, MODBUS controlled system, fully monitored over an ethernet connection. We always added sensors, very rarely replaced like-for-like if something wasn't working perfectly and resulted in an old boat with all the cutting edge technology. I led my team by utilizing their strengths, sharing knowledge between all levels, ensuring to stamp out any "blame culture" which is endemic in yachting. My engineering team was approachable and happy to help all departments as we were all working to a common goal. I learnt a lot during my tenure as Chief Engineer. It gave me a lot of confidence to tackle all the tasks that engineering and management can throw at an individual who is exposed to extreme pressure and responsibility. Ultimately it taught me great lessons in motivation to ensure standards are kept to the utmost high levels - with this there were few surprises and failures.

MCA Y3 2nd Engineer on 2:2 RotationI joined Diamond in the shipyard and my first task was to replace the entire ships alarm monitoring system. This was a great project to undertake as it involved removing all of the old remote terminal units, replacing the panels with new Rittal enclosures and wiring the new PLC in. In my time as 2nd Engineer on Diamond, alongside the ETO, we pulled over 5 miles of CAT7 cable while we were installing IoT sensors and PLCs around the vessel. An amazing experience for someone with an interest in electronics and improving systems. A project I took on alone was updating the antiquated Caterpillar Control Module which output engine sensor data over RS232 to a newer J1939 data link, which output MODBUS to our alarm system. This created a huge tangible difference in the way we monitored engine data as watchkeepers and enabled us to trend important data. My experience from Cosworth working on ECU's was paramount for this job as there was a lot of rewiring and terminating to be done as on any CANbus style network - let alone all of the extra TCP monitoring and displays we decided to install. This role had me working back to back with the Chief Engineer, whereby while one was resting the other was on duty. This was my first experience of being solely in charge of all equipment at any given time. I learnt a lot about VSAT for providing the guests with internet, as well as all the heavy sailing hydraulic machinery. After 3 or so months learning about ECU hardware and calibration software I began to support the product in field. Since then I was involved in both the sales and engineering support of complete car solutions involving ECU and chassis loggers right the way through to engines and engine components.I supported the entire spectrum of motorsport vehicles from GT cars and Superbikes through to top end single-seaters.The relationships I built whilst representing Cosworth Electronics led to the generation of future business with major OEM's and established racing teams worldwide.I also learnt a lot about engines and engine management software. Project management from a blank engine to one that could be reliably used in a professional racing series.
