About Edmonia Baker
People in organizations already know the same old song about how complex challenges or wicked problems require collaboration and leadership that enables difference. This song is even backed by research and practice that shows that when different people—be it different backgrounds, knowledge, genders, and abilities combine, it sparks creativity, it's good for business and it helps organizations adapt to the complexity they face in an ever-changing world. But why, then, do organizations, leadership, and individuals, find it so difficult to make difference happen?The problem is that ‘working across differences’ sounds so good, yet somehow it can feel so bad. Leadership and organizational language lack processes, operational structures, and vocabulary that knows how to mobilize transformation amidst the tensions that emerge when humans are faced with complexity and difference. Consequently, human as well as business value is lost. I want to change that. I help leadership, board levels, and organizations to develop vocabuluary, processes, and (organizational)structures that enable the human, social, and business value of difference. Diversity and Inclusion is an intrinsic part of these dynamics and I argue that unless leadership understands why as well as knows how to deal with it strategically in their processes, inclusion of difference will most likely not happen. I currently run my own company and do a Ph.D. at Copenhagen Business School. I have work experience with startups and global, private, and public organizations. My Ph.D. focuses on leadership and gender diversity in the top echelons of Danish organizations and why and how the inclusion of diversity matters in the context of complexity leadership. CurrentCorporate and organizational efforts to adapt to complex problems, such as climate change, digital technology shifts, or gender harassment and #metoo increasingly highlight the importance of difference and working across various perspectives and knowledges to ensure the necessary adaptions that give way to different solutions, new outcomes, and learning.However, to value difference also means to welcome and enable the tensions and the discomfort that can emerge when multiple perspectives are present. Widely accepted leadership perspectives often promote consensus, familiarity, or feeling comfortable, and as a result, are often ineffectual at addressing and adapting to complex issues in ways that include different perspectives and knowledge and allow for them to flourish.Alternatively, this Ph.D. focuses on gender diversity in the C-suite and boardroom levels of Danish organizations to study dynamics of tension and difference. On the basis of qualitative, open-ended conversations with men and women in these top positions, this study shows how the experience of tension around sensitive issues can either stand in the way or enable the adaptive process. The findings add to knowledge about the adaptive and productive potential of tension and herein to a leadership perspective on how to enable difference.
