In 2008, after finishing medschool I started as a PhD candidate at the Rijnstate Hospital the Netherlands. My PhD titled "Results and complications of Bariatric Surgery" was finished in 2014, containing 15 original publications. Since then, I published over 90 articles on metabolic surgery in peer reviewed journals and I am member of the Editorial Board of Obesity Surgery.2011 Marked the year that I started as surgical resident at the Radboud University and finished end 2018 at the Rijnstate hospital. During my residency I started (and was also head of) the Metabolic Surgery Research Departement, the first of its kind in the Nethelands. As a copromotor I am honoured to now have guided the 10th candidates to their PhD title. During these years I got the chance to join the IFSO-EC Communication department and the IFSO World Communication Commithee.While helping patients battle their overweight and obesity is my passion as a doctor, it seemed obvious that I decided to solely focus on Metabolic Surgery and other treatments to help patients reach a healthier weight. With this in mind, a new adventure started in 2019 after the first few years as a surgeon, as I became Medical Director of the Allurion Kliniek, where patients with overweight can be treated with the Allurion Gastric Balloon. With the introduction of GLP-1 analogs, we started Overgewichtnederland.nl this year to help patients in all overweight categories.And that is not where the story ends. While the stongest treatment for many of our obesity patients is metabolic surgery, this could not be missing from my armamentarium. I however missed the true patient centered care in the current healthcare system in The Netherlands. That is why together with Frits Berends, MD PhD we opened WeighWorks Clinics in Amersfoort the Netherlands in 2021 after four years of preparation. Personal and high quality care for patients that deserve the best in metabolic surgery.Although all the above seems important achievements, the most important are not even mentioned. These are my spouse and our brilliant and funny four daughters. These five are the true blessings in life, so keep in mind: work hard but enjoy your family life even harder.
